I've read numerous articles about the terrible work culture at FB, with many comparing it to a popularity contest. Right from employees posting trivial things on their feeds to get attention and being noticed, to being left behind if they don't keep up with the feeds of other employees. I've also read negative stuff about the performance reviews there. How true is this? Edit: This is a genuine question based on online content. I have not interviewed at FB and my intent is not to disparage FB.
Sounds like you watched the techlead video. Did you get rejected recently?
I did watch the tech lead video and also read a news article on CNBC about this. No I honestly haven't interviewed there. I don't think I am cut out for such an environment if it's true.
Don’t be so salty. This was a fair question. Puh, this blind culture. Some people behave like assholes if they don’t show they real names, ha?
What do you want to achieve from this post? If it’s to get over a rejection, get over it already
I'm not that petty lol. Haven't interviewed there to be honest and don't have friends that work there.
I see. So it’s just the run of the mill FB bashing. I wished you had some unique perspective to share
Whatever helps you feel better about working at VMware...
While VMware is terrible in many ways, it's not a popularity contest for sure.

No. Workplace is like a message board where you post updates. Only a fool would think it’s a popularity contest - it has immense value as a shared memory. Much better than slack.
Is it not like a news feed? I was under the impression it's like a news feed with endless scrolling.
Btw I love Slack, it's hard to believe something beats it.
Well, you know, the more desi (Indian) population starts to grow in any organization, the more "competitive" the culture becomes for no reason.
Companies should find ways to preserve their culture. Toxicity should not be tolerated.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much OP. Even if you listen to tech lead he says to try FB anyways. If you’re a high performer and a likable person, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.
Got it. A recruiter from FB reached out to me but I wasn't sure what to expect. Thanks
If you are a good person, technically and ethically with good behavior, FB is an awesome company
Also remember, they would pay you so much, so ofcourse, they expect you to perform steadily and deliver stuff
Totally agree that work should be proportional to pay.
To some extend it was a popularity contest when I was working there but, honestly speaking, what tech company isn’t?
I can't fathom posting on a feed after I get my code to compile.
Sure, but there’s always a cross functional impact component factored in when it’s review season. That’s when you have to brag about your pet projects.
The problem with Facebook is that top management does not acknowledge that there is any problem. They treat employees as fungible and keep churning them out consistently. What would explain industry leading attrition rate and the need to pay significantly more than market to attract talent ? Remember FB is a very big brand and despite that has to bribe candidates with incremental 10-15 percent pay relative to industry because their culture is so shitty in general that people don’t last long. I would also like to call out that it is not a meritocracy by any means but a rotten popularity contest.
I can't comment on how it's on the inside because I haven't worked there. But I always believe that the jobs that are hard to fill pay the most - includes highly skilled as well as rubbish hard to fill jobs. And I've always wondered why FB throws so much money considering they haven't significantly contributed to the world as much as Google (search, Android, Gmail etc). I have also heard about the high attrition but that could be attributed to their cut throat culture of making employees slog year round to offset their crazy pay.
My spouse works at FB as a engineering manager. Life is truly a popularity contest there. At least if you desire to go up. Maybe as a IC you don’t have to play the politics game as much
