Example of companies that are a yes: Google, FB, Yahoo, Twitter, Pandora, Snapchat, Yelp, Spotify, and LinkedIn. Let's define dependent as 50% of revenue or more :)
Why define the company based on revenue model and instead define it based on the value they provide? Can you imagine a life without the ability to search the entire internet faster than you can blink? Or living without the incredibly reliable turn by turn directions maps provides? And for Facebook, despite controversial privacy practices, they are connecting people all over the globe. I think that is pretty cool.
Without online ad revenues many of the services that people are getting for free wouldn't be possible. This is the most sustainable model at least for now.
The ad model is also a benefit for people who might not have the means to pay for these services out of their own pockets. The knowledge gap between haves and have nots would likely increase further if services like Google charged people for use.
LinkedIn should be no
Microsoft posters take the cake lately for the dumbest comments. They really hire anyone there, don’t they?
1. It was a question 2. Turned down an engineering position with apple maps special projects team one year ago. The recruiter even messaged me on LinkedIn again two weeks ago if I would be interested in a seattle position. 3. This is what we call an ad hominem in adult land. Your welcome to engage in any arguments as long as its about what the other person said. Otherwise, please gtfo.
indian?
We get services for free but our private lives get raped. I think I'd prefer to pay a small fee for using a service and not having my data collected. At least it feels more honest.
Slow down, since when was LinkedIn dependent on ad revenue?
Say what you want about Intel but I'm always really proud of our business model focused on cutting edge design and manufacturing. Our business practices have not always been perfect (AMD stuff, conflict minerals) but for the most part it's something to be proud of.
+1 About the only reason to be proud of. Producing physical things that are useful to people feels the most honest and valuable work I could do. Working on a website that makes money from ads and hype is something that makes me shudder.
Too bad you guys missed the mobile revolution.
