Is it time to quit? 31, 9 yoe, 450k tc, 1.1m nw, 7 years at G It might be time to take a year off of work to travel. But the lizard part of my brain has some serious worries. I have an easy rest-and-vest project right now, probably at my computer 4 hours/day. I spend several months of each year away from my office and nobody cares. I'm worried that any job I get after this be more stressful. Maybe that's ok if I care more about the work / company. With the slow trickle of Google layoffs, will recruiters assume I was one of them? And will that negatively affect my response rate? On the other hand, maybe I'm too hyperfocused on FIRE. Do I really want to be free in my 50s instead of my 30s? And I have gotten a max l5 offer from Meta back in the hiring craze of 2021, so I certainly have the leetcode and system design chops. I could probably also start applying for L6 from here on. My mom quit her job for a sabbatical in 2007 and that was a fucking depressing time when she was trying to return in 2008 Who here has taken a sabbatical? What did it feel like when you came back? #sabbatical

You can coast a little bit
Not necessary to take a major >= 1 year break. A few months is an excellent refresher. I’ve done it between every job. I dont lie in interview about the time off. I just tell them where I went on vacation what I did. I even took a 6 month break to start a startup which flopped but it was fun to build. I showed them my startup project when I interviewed.
Always a good time to invest in yourself. Mentally and emotionally.
If you can afford it then absolutely!! We weren’t born on this one lone planet in an infinite universe to do this mediocre tech work.
You sound burnt out, FMLA or short term disability both can be used to take a few months off to figure it out while still getting paid
What docs do you need to justify it?
Company dependent
Why is it always the Google people that are barely doing any work and making 400k that come on here to complain about life and how they want to quit their job? Just take some leave
You ever watch Office Space?
Yeah, your life is nothing like that.
I took a 3 year break. I didn't have a lot of money at that time. Once in a while would get some freelance project to support myself. I traveled a lot, made good friends, had few flings and breakups. After 3 years, I got back into job. Now when I look back, they were amazing 3 years of my life. Working in Google is like a golden handcuff. I worked for a startup, so quitting and going on a break was much easier.
I did a sabbatical. Had no issues getting back in but Markey was better. Your leaving a cush solid org. For who knows what. Your prob making enough to take that gamble. But just know market suuuuuuuucks right now. Legit sucks. And may not be improved in 6 months.
Congrats on your TC. Do you mind sharing your job role for those who are thriving to get to that TC please I agree with the others. Take a long pto or medical leave than sabbatical
Take medical/family leave for 3 months
What docs do you need to justify it?
Your doctors should certify you cannot work for a bit
