JPL: Legacy or Modern?

Hello, Im currently working with data in an environemt that is pretty laid back and with a good number of the people i work around my age (mid 20s). I have been consideringn making a switch soon and JPL popped up on my radar. Ive had a few SWE friends work at JPL and most if them implied (or flat out said) that the tools used at JPL (at least for SWE) are fairly outdated. They also said that the people are on the older side but that its a good environemtn ans that the people there are passionate about their work. Can anyone give me a bit more info re how the environment and data tools used at JPL compare to the environemt/tools at other tech companies like Google, Uber, etc? Thanks in advance!

I worked at a sister lab to JPL and the computers and tools were super outdated. The focus was more math heavy, so a lot of the code was written in functional languages which didn’t have UI or testing framework support. Also things moved very slowly because you need to get things right all the time vs you can break an app and roll it back.

Pretty slow environment overall and pay cannot compare to big tech obviously. That being said, the work can be interesting depending on the group.
