Hi, I'm mid/senior SWE. Background in a fintech startup, a well respected big company (FAANG-like, maybe two tiers below) and investment management company. Maths degree from top 10 uni, non-target. Long-term goal is to work for tech-first trading companies like Jane Steet, Two Sigma, HRT as a SWE. Despite feeling that I would work well there (performance reviews always good, I take on responsibility quickly and deliver projects on time with minimal tech debt etc.) I don't feel like my background is good enough yet to even get an interview. What can I be doing to help myself at this stage? Should I apply directly and hope? Try to get a referral somehow? Do advent of code in ocaml? Target FAANG as a stepping stone? TC £100k
I have interviewed with them all. It’s tough. It’s LC, but kind of a harder leetcode. You won’t win by learning the problem, as it will require considerable thinking. Ocaml won’t help unless you work on something like prod engineer at jane street. C++ would help if you want HRT, but usually they just hire C++ god who did a lot of competitive programming. Jane Street and Two Sigma are leetcode, but not the usual “learn the problem” thing like tech companies. The question usually require some thinking (2S), or really quick and code fast with minimal errors (JS). They focus on hiring new grad pretty much just from oxford or cambridge. I’m not sure about full-time, and yes, everyone there is a super star. Not your typical superstar, but IMO-level superstar, so they’re all very smart people. This is opinion from my own experience and research. Sorry if any of them are not accurate. Starting salary here (even for new grad) is 250-300k, so yes they do expect a lot.
Hey, what about the seniors, do you know the range?
Thanks, that's really helpful. I guess the best idea for me right now is to practice LC hard and these types of questions and start applying. Worst thing they can do is say no I guess. How many days are you in the office per week? I know working from home is frowned upon by some of these places.
Il have a chat if your interested in sig
You’re only in Dublin and the US?
How does SIG compare to 2s/HRT/etc. in terms of compensation/brand-name? Genuinely curious. The impression I have from the outside is SIG is a family-friendly better WLB place to work, but that reflects in the comp - is that true?
Hey folks, what is the expectation in your rough evaluation on the hiring bar on the coding side through a codeforces rating? Is it 1900+ CF rating?
From what I know, TS and HRT hire for very specific roles in London. The timing factor is important when applying for these two. So you might wait for the good opening. A referral can help if your referee vouches you well. You might need to reach out to someone working there and explain how you can be a good fit when they ask. Getting a FANG on your CV can increase your chance to be called by headhunters/recruiters, but this is not a necessity.
Thanks for the heads up! When you say very specific, are you talking e.g. low latency C++?
Despite what people think, it is easy to get interviews there. Did you apply to any of them yet? I’ve interviewed with all of them and they are very responsive if the role is actively hiring. They will send an OA and 90% of the people (probably more) will fail at that. So just send them your resume
Thanks! That's interesting,I haven't applied yet but maybe I will. How did you find the OAs? I read that Jane Street don't do LC but want to make sure I'm prepared.
