I am a 30yo M who has had a largely risk averse, conservative life. Compared to my roomie, my life pales in comparison. All I have going for me is that I earn more than him. On the other hand: - he has a solid dating life - travels with his university friends every so often on overseas/road trips - has fun doing things like weed, clubbing - hobbies like skiing, cycling His experiences have shaped him with a great outlook/perspective while I spend all my time in front of a laptop consuming Reddit. I have always erred on the side of caution. Didn't smoke/drink in college, while most of my friends did, and missed out on a lot of fun in that process. Even in school, all I did was study. Zero hobbies - no sport, music, nothing. Now, all I do is work. Aim for that next promotion. I feel like so much of my life has flown past me and I haven't lived/enjoyed any of it. My life is 1D and non-wholesome. We all inhabit this planet for a set amount of time, and I no longer want to just exist - I want to live! Always hesitant to spend money on clothes or try out new cuisines either because I was taught to save and not deviate from the familiar. It is easy to blame my upbringing/culture but I want to live a bit more care free. Any other folks who have gone through the same as I have and made changes to their lives? Open to suggestions.
Ask your manager if you can work from anywhere in the world and travel for 2 years. You won’t regret it.
he works at pwc. he can work from anywhere in the office and that's a stretch
Probably doesn’t even have badge access to the higher floors 😂
Specifically, south Asian?
Specially south of south Asia ?
30s not old. At least in nyc. Also move to New York
yeah move to nyc so all your savings is spent on hoas and you "enjoy" your life
no need for quote marks around "enjoy". Not a single person i know who moved to NYC ended up regretting it, 5+ years later. And no, they didn't spend a single cent of their savings on it. Just gotta work at a company that pays you more than just a bare necessity minimum
Just get a new roommate - this is filling you with jealousy
The roommate is showing another way. Jealousy comes from within. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Yeah but the roommate could ask him to accompany
Well you can live life the way you want, nothing is stopping you from having fun
TC or gtfo
Go out with him and the boys, stop being a boring loser. Good luck
Start small. Male a list of things you'd like to do. Sort by price, ascending order. Start with the cheapest activity and keep going down. Forget your job for the next 6 months. Focus on investing in yourself.
Sound advice. Personally I wouldn’t bank on the roommate for a good time since he may not want you there (given that he hasn’t invited you so far).
Try things in life. Otherwise you’ll regret later. You don’t have to continue it. But give a shot.
Agree. I have come the slow realization that to live life, one must experience it. For far too long, I have been living life based on what others have demanded from me. I would hate myself if I retired with a lot of money and no experiences to show for, especially from my younger days.

What’s stopping you from being like him?
The fear of deviating from the correct path. Lot of it is cultural conditioning.
then stay put and don't complain
