Hi Blind Community, This is my first time writing on Blind and I hope I can receive some advice, help, and/or referrals, but also to vent a bit. Quick Intro: I'm a 4th-year Computer Science and Statistics student in my undergrad, and I'm a Canadian citizen studying in the US (3 years of STEM OPT, TN visa after - not requiring sponsorship but I could be wrong), graduating in Spring 2024. What I'm looking for: Referrals and advice for a full-time job after I graduate in the US. I'm open to different roles like Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Software Engineer, Quant Researcher, Energy Trading...etc, just anything that fits my skills. Experiences (all paid): Prior to college: Worked as a Data Science Intern at a Startup for a year 2nd Year of College: Worked as a Software and Data Engineer Intern for a year 3rd Year of College: Worked as a Data Scientist at a big energy firm (although I'm part of a smaller research lab) since September 2022 and I still work there (1 year now) 3rd and 4th Year: I'm also part of two research labs on campus, one focuses on Deep Learning and applications for sciences, and the other focuses on applying ML to energy markets. Some projects might get a publication before I graduate. Skills: Python, ML-Stack (PyTorch, Pandas, Numpy, Dask, Spark...etc.), Xarray, Airflow, Statistics YOE (internships): ~3 years TLDR (venting): This is just soul-crushing. I feel like I've worked so hard over the years, missing out on the "college experience" by constantly working on research or on my job, just to receive so many rejections this year. I don't even know if it's me or because of the market. Prior to this year, I've gotten a good amount of interviews (Final Rounds for Asana, Palantir, Akuna Capital, Belvedere Trading, LinkedIn, Amazon...etc. and many other semi-final rounds), yet this year I'm getting rarely anything. I get auto-rejected, ghosted, or get into the final round and turned down because I'm not a citizen even though I have a lot more experience and skills compared to back then. I know that in the grand scheme of things, I'm still fortunate to eat, to have shelter...etc. but I don't even know why I tie my self-worth to finding a job so badly. It really makes me reflect on my journey and I have quite a few regrets. Back when I chose to focus on DS/ML stuff, I thought it was a good choice, and am quite involved in the research space. I'm considering a Ph.D., but I need to wait for a year or so for my projects to be published to even have a chance since ML programs have become so competitive these days. I feel so burned out from just constantly applying, reaching out on LinkedIn to just have my hopes up, and then crushing it down. My current company hires based on project needs and I don't think I'm even going to have an offer (I asked and they said let's wait a few months) even though I've built so many pipelines, tools for research, and models for them that they use regularly. Honestly, I don't even want to work for them since I feel like I'd stagnate (I'm the only Data Scientist on the team), but just knowing that I'm wanted somewhere is still better than nothing. I feel so embarrassed for breaking down about this and just feeling useless. I never imagined myself posting something like this, but I just really need help, advice, and a place to vent. Hey, I'm also in similar situation. I have reached out to people on LinkedIn for referral. I do this everyday and maintain a excel sheet.
Thank you for the advice! Iāve been doing that but putting it on Excel would be easier to organize
