Job offer comparison. Lyft v/s Twitter

I have a few job offers. Out of the options, I'm undecided between twitter and lyft. I am very well aware of the fact that twitter, as a company, is not doing well. however I'm intrigued by their engineering quality and the scale of work. Lyft on the other hand, has the main advantage of being a pre-IPO company and probably lot to learn in terms of building things from ground up. The total annual comp is comparable. Lyft: 320k, Twitter: 300k. is my perception about Twitter engineering correct? and what about the work life balance there? What would you recommend out of these two if I do value quality of work over money (unless there is a significant difference). my other offers that I'm not considering at the moment: Box, Apple and Netflix.

The VP of Engineering at Lyft is ex-Twitter and a lot of great people followed him there.

yeah so I heard.

I sat down with him while he was in Seattle recently and he seems like an incredibly smart guy who's very passionate about lyft. Really changed my view of wanting to work for/on lyft and now I'll be applying in the next 6 months.

Why are you not considering Netflix and Apple? Both pay really well. Apple is investing heavily in services and Siri, so there will be challenges. Netflix has good tech with a lot of autonomy and freedom. Considering Lyft is pre IPO, don't you think your offer is on the lower side of market?

Salesforce guJO20 OP Jul 22, 2016

I haven't heard good things about Apple culture. Lots of internal politics. And teams fighting for work within. And their offer was the lowest of em all. Netflix is definitely attractive and they will probably match my highest offer, but work wise Twitters team is way better and high visibility. but I haven't totally ruled out netflix for sure. Lyft has offered 175k base and 575k equity based on current evaluation. Do you think that's on the lower side?

What level for the 575k?

By the way, did you try Uber?

Are you the type to stay at least 2-3 years? I'd go lyft. Twitter just seems like a sinking ship, I'd only risk it if I didn't mind switching in a year.

Salesforce guJO20 OP Jul 22, 2016

I would usually stay for 2 years at least. but if twitters situation gets worse after a year, I won't mind switching.

Netflix. Oh, I guess you live in the city and don't want commute?

Salesforce antigeek Jul 22, 2016

no, commute is not an issue. why would you prefer netflix over twitter?

Congrats on the nice offers. OP, what's your level of experience and whats the title you're being offered at Lyft and Twitter?

Salesforce antigeek Jul 22, 2016

thanks. I have 7-8 years or experience. Lyft has no levels, everyone is Software Engineer. At Twitter they're currently offering me senior software engineer with a provision to promote to staff software engineer within 2-3 month of joining based on performance.

Apple ARkk56 Jul 22, 2016

What is ur netflix offer?

Salesforce antigeek Jul 23, 2016

Netflix hasn't given any numbers yet, but their saying that they'll easily match the highest offer, but I have to decide to move forward first. they know numbers for my other offers.

Apple ARkk56 Jul 23, 2016

This sounds like typical netflix:)

LinkedIn hju Jul 22, 2016

I have the same question y not netflix ? the reasons are pay ll be definitely better, work is gr8 afaik.. nd gd tech as well.. bad side of netflix - i heard thy will fire ppl if they are not a top performer, bad work life balance

Salesforce antigeek Jul 23, 2016

yeah I'm now considering netflix too. Need to talk to their dev manager for more details on the team and the role.

Amazon Zero123 Jul 23, 2016

What's the role?

Salesforce antigeek Jul 23, 2016

it's a senior software engineer role. Twitter, Apple and Netflix are specific roles to my expertise in Applied Machine Learning and Discovery. Lyft is more generic and open

How do you come up with the annual comp? How do RSUs play a role in the $320k?
