How long does it take for that move. What are the requirements that they would be looking for?
Alternatively, I believe you have 6 months for your manager to make a case that you were hired at the wrong level.
I have never heard of something like this.
I've only heard of it once. Maybe my manager just has incredible pull, and it's not a real policy. Would be interested in another confirmation.
But if your manager is also an L6, there ain’t a thing you can do.
What's your TC as an L6?
Is it for SDE, SDM, PO? Tl;dr Promotion will take time L7 is a Principal Level position You should have an org level impact to make this change! Someone new would take atleast 2-3 years realistically to make such an impact! Unless you come in and in 6 months propose a complete rearchitecture of the product and get it implemented in another 6 months, chances of promotion to L7 are slim!
Everyone has a level, level 7 SDM is called Senior SDM, SDE, TPM are called Principal.
You got suckered - that rarely if ever happens. But you might be able to pull it off if you build a plan with your manager and talk about it every 1:1
Sorry to break this to you but ain’t gonna happen. Ideally you need to have two performances review under your belt before promotion committee approve your promotion. If you are lucky you might get it after year and half.
For L5 to L6 also?
That won’t be a big deal if you have relevant experience and prove your value to your manager.

There’s a bunch of internal documentation oh how the promotion process works. But get an L7 mentor ASAP then you have to start doing the work to build the document trail that you deserve the promotion.
What kind of document trail is required?
