Coming from a name brand company as L4 equivalent (this is a throwaway acct). Joining google soon. New TC: ~400k, had some competing offers. RSUs are 33/33/22/12 vesting so TC is going down in Y3 and Y4. Don't want to go into specifics about the breakdown or competing offers. Some questions: 1. What is average time to promo L5 -> L6? 2. If I'm really good and aggressive, how fast can I promo? 3. Is there any raise on promo or is it just the standard refreshers everyone gets? 4. Is it possible to get >500k TC ever at Google? With RSUs going down in Y3/Y4, it seems like best case is refreshers keep me at 400k, average case is I'm going down to ~300k. 5. Will companies balk if I try to interview for L6 positions without getting an L6 promo at Google? That would look like ~2 years as L4 -> 2 years as Google L5 -> Interviewing for L6 role elsewhere (say FB or other high paying company). Any other advice for joining Google as L5 would be much appreciated. ----- My interview prep since Blind helped me a lot: 1. ~3 months, started casually and ramped up closer to interviews 2. Started with EPI, went through all topics and did some problems in every chapter 3. Leetcode >150 problems, could complete most mediums <20min and sometimes could figure out a hard problem (probably 30% of the time) 4. Read DDIA, was excessive and companies didn't really go that deep, but built confidence. 5. Went through system design primer and some random youtube videos. Most youtube videos on sys design are useless. 6. "System Design Interview" channel videos were the best - watched all videos 2x (this channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUHFg8CZFws) 7. Spent a few days writing down notes on every project I've ever worked on and thought of examples for all common behavioral questions. I feel like the most useful things for my interviews were 1. communicating good (pretending to be nice ;) and explaining things well) 2. prior experience with large distributed systems that sounded impressive 3. crushing coding questions so I wasn't stressed during sys design and behavioral interviews. I don't want to share specific questions or chat in DMs, sorry. Anyways please help answer the questions above. #google
Congrats.
Congrats on the offer. Do you have 2 yoe total? And cleared Google L5? Google L5 is Amazon L6. Damn. That would have needed some serious chops to crack. Nice work 👍 I do think L6 is like principal at Google so going for principle level is going to be hard for you after 2 years.
Haha no I'm >10yoe
I am sure companies will give you interviews with that exp. and you can probably crack it as well. Did Google not ask LC hard? You said you could only do hards 30% of the time.
Tbh you probably won’t get L6. L5 is terminal level and unless you’re really exceptional it’s unlike you’ll get L6. It’s near impossible to get promo in google these days (which is why I left). Your best bet is leaving and re-interviewing for higher promo level
Would Coinbase interview me for L6 equivalent if I have good projects, but haven't gotten to Google L6?
Yep, nobody knows what level you were in previous company.
Congratulations OP
You said name brand company, did you mean no-name company?
No I meant a name brand company everyone knows, but I don't believe in anonymity so I made a burner account for this question.
How did you make a burner account? Your own domain email?
For leetcode 150 problems were they Google tagged?
That Blind 75 list and then worked from top of Google and FB list. I don't know how much the top list helped vs just covering all topics.
Did you also interviewed at Facebook? Their coding similarities and diff?
How were the interview questions? All mediums?
Mostly medium level, hardest one was a difficult (for me) DP question that leetcode would classify as medium.
What do you mean by 'crushing coding so I was not stressed during sys design'?
Get the best solution in your coding rounds so you aren't worrying about how you did while you're answering behavioral questions. It was important to be calm and confident, as it affects my communication abilities.

Congrats on the offer. I am also in the process of job searching so your tips and preparations techniques would definitely help. Thanks for sharing all the information.
