Layoffs at Hippo Insurance

I am being laid off from @hippo today and I have to say that it was a horrible experience working here. It was completely disorganized, leadership was non-existent, and the work was repetitive. I made a mistake joining this place, and I am happy to move on. If you are thinking of joining engineering or data analytics, please stay away. The problems are at the leadership level, and it will take years before it starts looking like a healthy organization. TC: was 200k

Good luck my friend, mistakes happen, take that experience and move on to something better

Any insurance company is a bad place to work at, unless you're a sales guy.

Depends on your goals. It is a pretty great place if you wanna coast

I ran away from hippo a year ago, after the IPO disaster. Looks like they are going even further downhill.

I got hit with the layoffs as well. They use almost no new tech: a front end (React and they still use Angular, though they’re in the process of deprecating it), a Node service and an SQL database. You could have built the system using technology from 2005. My mistake was staying as long as I did. That was just stupid on my part. I was looking for other jobs, but I simply was not proactive enough. They’re growing their overseas team and seem to be investing little in growing US talent. Also, Hippo is an insurance company and doesn’t really need any cutting edge tech. In addition, they’re also trying to push some of their important work to the offshore team (such as the mobile app development). You join Hippo if you need a job but don’t get too comfortable or coast.

Did they get anywhere with that ridiculous Safari framework? I remember them pushing for it, when you needed to write 3x-4x code then without any framework.

Everyone on the backend team is forced to use it, so yes. The entire thing as well as most of their applications was a giant code smell. For you, what made you want to join Hippo in the first place and at what point did you realize it was a terrible company (from a software developer’s perspective)?

@Hippo, are you actively interviewing and if you are, how is that going?
