"Hiring slowdown"... So far there seemed to be a consensus that Shopify won't see the wide scale layoffs other tech companies have due to low TC/high turnover/high cash to debt ratio. Did the recent news change your mind? #layoffs #shopify
Microsoft also no layoffs cause of 🥜 TC
Stay the fuck away from shopify… they have every bullshit phrase for you, ‘missionaries not mercenaries’, or how ‘it’s a jungle gym’ and your career growth can take you anywhere… BULLSHIT, it’s all external hires and the internal people are not given the chance to progress. There’s people they hire with less than 1/2 the talent or experience rather than allowing internals to move up… toxic toxic toxic
I've had this happen to me a few times. It's crazy. I'm explaining to my lead the purpose of our job, how's it's done, the norms, etc. They were given the lead role because they are familiar with execs....not because they have the experience, knowledge, attitude, etc. Departments that only exist to justify themselves. It's horrible.
BINGO!!!!!! I’ve had PEOPLE I TRAINED AND HAD HALF THE EXPERIENCE, apply for the same position and not only get selected, but I didn’t even get an interview… not to mention being overlooked over new hires for positions they have less experience overall, let alone shopify knowledge, ABSOLUTE HYPOCRISY, they expect you to drink the Kool aid, calling it champagne while knowing it’s piss Then they give you the ‘we thousand get it was a better fit’ excuse or ‘please continue to apply’… STAY THE FUCK AWAY, this will anger you to no end… it’s the equivalent of being a teacher, and then having your student be selected (who knows less than you and is less experienced) for a scholarship that you both applied to… and then being told they were a better fit with less… toxic and hypocritical doesn’t even begin to describe what happens
They are starting to lay people off silently, some have reported 100s so far right before new comp rollout and right after tobi got his new power (squeezed by at 54%). They've started giving PIP to anyone that dissents from the culture, speaks out or generally they want to get rid of.
Can firm layoffs as I was laid off.
Were you given PIP or a warning before hand?
Sorry to hear mate :( May I ask which department you were in? Let me know if I can help with connections for a new position
I thought Canada was a socialist country and laying people off was not that easy? 🤷♂️
They just have to pay a certain minimum severance
That severance isnt even mandatory. We get EI which is the mandatory
I have a Shopify offer and my H1B is still processing. Now I’m worried about the offer being rescinded if there are layoffs going on
Probably fine since you move from Snap
Are you Canadian?
They are already laying off people since end of May in small waves. I was one of the people let go. My estimate is they have laid off few hundreds. I know 6 people from my org let go out of a total headcount of around 100. And these are not the performance based layoffs. People are told without cause and many of them had positive ratings, including me.
Isnt that illegal? Pretty sure you can sue if the layoff was truly without cause
Not illegal in Canada, they told me its without cause, no mention of performance. It might be illegal in some countries in EU, because they did provide an abrupt offtrack rating to some of the EU folks they fired before letting them go within a day. Possibly to cover for the legal implication
Why are they still hiring then
They announced they are slowing down hiring
Yeah but you fire people in your org and hire externally makes no sense
It’s a sad thing to hear about people going through this… I’m sorry that you were one of those let go… but there are rumblings of this taking place at an accelerated rate
Yes i keep hearing from ex-colleagues some coworkers dissappearing every week.
2 whom i worked with were designers, some also in sales and in support have started now

Explains why i was rejected after doing the interviews well. Where is the source for this?

Sorry i looked up and there was that. They are so fucking shady about this. They were so quick at responding when i applied more than a month ago, after clearing some steps, it took 2.5 weeks for them to schedule pair programming. The recruiter said there was a glitch in the system, but what are the odds of having such a glitch? I had to email like 3-4 times to check the interview schedule. It seemed quite shady.
