I am looking to apply to companies outside of FAANG as well. I see some complaints on here and Glassdoor about firings of individuals and whole teams at Instacart, roblox, Coinbase, robinhood, Airbnb. I already knew about the covid layoffs at Airbnb but not the others. The hiring bar looks higher so I didn’t think that they got rid of too many employees. At apple that’s rare. Are these places like amazon and pip factories? How often does it happen if so?
Have you heard the same at Atlassian ?
Hiring bar is higher where
I’ll caveat this by saying I’m a product manager and not an engineer. For product, all those companies are harder to get into than amazon. Regardless that isn’t the point of the thread - my question is about how often it happens since we hear on here mostly about amazon and Netflix is well known and upfront on their policy.
But you’re comparing with amazon
Roblox didn’t layoff, we hired even faster. Also we are definitely not a pip culture
I’ve never seen a layoff in my 3+ years at IC, and am personally aware of exactly one PIP.
Instacart laid off 75% of the recruiting + people team pre Series D. 17+ people were affected at that time.
Instacart is pipping people who are reaching their 1 year cliff.. kind of a layoff before ipo, and a way to not pay people with stocks
No mandated PIPs at CB like Amzn. But you are let go if not performing well consistently (when not undergoing any personal trauma/untoward life situation)
I haven't heard of anything like this at Roblox. Where are you sourcing your information?
Take a look at Glassdoor and sort by negative reviews. Also on blind if you search for roblox, you will see the blind company reviews and in there people talk about it. It’s not just roblox though…it’s all of these companies. I get the sense that it’s within reason and not like amazon though based on some of the comments and messages.
Every company will let poor performers go. I won’t call it PIP culture.
Never heard of layoff at Instacart. Curious, where did you hear about that? Didn't even find anything on Glassdoor.
More pip: “I can provide a data point here, works 13 hours a day still got PIP email. My manager is nitpick every thing even I delivered every thing without issues, will leave soon”. There are several like that.
That says nothing about layoff
Never been a layoff at roblox. pip happens but there’s no quota like Amazon. The expectations are high though, and make no mistake, if you don’t meet them you WILL get pipped and later fired. When i say they’re high expectations, it’s not that you have to work many hours, and in fact that’s explicitly discouraged. The expectations are very reasonable, but you had better deliver on them
Could you further clarify what you mean by high expectations? Does this refer to the complexity of the work?
So leave
Layoffs…At the height of the pandemic? Or recently when people are struggling to even hire talent?
Airbnb was in pandemic. The others had reviews that were all over. That’s why I’m trying to figure out how often it happens. But go to any of the glassdoor reviews for those companies and you’ll see some who mention it.
Airbnb was in pandemic, but they also cleaned house in some areas that were overexpanded
