Lazy Manager

Posting it here for larger group I work as a PM & I have been doing well in the team so far. My team acknowledge my efforts and I have been well rewarded. My concern is my manager, while she is a good human being but she is hardly present at work; has no clue of what I’m doing. I rarely get any input and advice on my work; as a manager I expect her to give small tips to make my work shine or at least get traction but she isn’t responsive on mails either(email notifications off on phone), never present in partner meetings & so on.. As a result there isn’t a good representation of my work in GPM level sync-up or any public forum. When I see my peers I see them having easy and where every work of theirs get shine and help from their lead. This was not the case before when I wasn’t reporting to her instead without a lead I was doing much better. I have 2 options now & I genuinely need advice from folks at Microsoft. 1. Be in this team, pick up a work on my own be a single owner & drive it. 2. Switch teams; start working on new. Each of these options has its own pros and cons, I need your recommendation. One more question is this type of culture common in other teams too? Am I expecting too much from manager at senior level?

I have same situation. My manager do not value high performer. He just treat everyone same.

Play the game. Setup skip level 1:1 and ask how can I help you more?

Microsoft Longhorn95 Nov 15, 2018

Then expect your current manager to ostracize you for going over her head - never a good strategy

Oracle Xmx32G Nov 15, 2018

How is that any different from his current situation?

No, you are not asking to much. Have you specifically asked her to give you more input and will she share our the great work the team is doing? In other words, what you need? Sometimes I have seen managers think they are doing well, because their team is doing great work and they don’t want to “micro-manage” - however they end up being disconnected from the work and not helpful. This is normal at all companies and has to do more with manager capability and not company culture. I have found that if I ask specifically, “Hey ____, I am getting ready to ______, and would like your feedback. Do you have 5 minutes to connect”? Or, “Hey ______, our team is really doing some great work on _________, do you think there is a better way for us to provide visibility? What can you do at the management level and what can we do on our level”? Hope that helps.
