Leave AWS? Forte: achieves

Data scientist, Yoe 5y, 1.5y at AWS. Got my forte review today as “achieves”. - super demotivated. Manager said there will be no annual stock refresh or bonus. Current project gives me nightmares. Bank account cash balance 1 million. If I wait till June I can vest additional 15 RSUs but need to suffer the current project. On the fence of telling my manager that I’m gonna quit tomorrow. What should I do.

You can try to cruise through June and not suffer the current project. Set hard limits on your working hours and don’t work above those limits no matter what (if you get pinged by your manager late at night, reply next day and bs your way out like “I was diving deep into obstacles a, b and c in this project because I care so much” 😂). If you know you are leaving, detach yourself emotionally from the project and focus more on pretending you care and working hard instead or actually caring and working hard. Worst case worst you get kicked out sooner and lose those RSUs... oh well, your have money saved up.

Achieves is what the majority of people get.

You’re still on your 4 year vest and stock has taken a rip in 2020. Even if you had exceeds doubt you’d have gotten a bump. Your current TC is likely a lot higher than the offer you accepted. Why demotivated? I personally just focus on my W2. I see it going up every year by 5 figures since joining Amazon.

You don't get anything in the first 4 years anyways. I would say stick around and get the stonks.

I'm in same situation. It's about deciding whether $35k (assuming 28% tax) is worth it for the time trade. Is your plan to quit without a job lined up? If you plan on getting another job start applying now and get the new company to compensate you for the 35k loss. IMHO they really need to work on the wording for these rankings. "Achieves" sounds lame and a slap in the face for what we all sacrifice in personal time to work at Amazon. It also seems like the band for achieves must be so large that it's almost meaningless. Is anyone aware of actual criteria that results in "exceeds" or is this just a political game?

I was told 75% end up as achieves. It's surprisingly demotivating

I was told 90% ended up in achieve. But the real game is politics. I know colleagues who do nothing gets exceed.. joke.

Since Amazon does stack ranking, your rating is not only dependent on your performance but also on that of other members on your team. Since the ratings determine comp - more so after the first 4 years, folks who have been on the team longer would see their comp drop if they don’t get exceeds. So if you have other folks on the team who have a longer tenure and your comp won’t change if you get an exceed or achieve, the exceed rating will go to someone whom your manager wants to prop up. Giving you the exceed rating will only “waste” that rating. It’s not explicitly discussed in Talent Reviews, but managers push to get higher rating for folks they want to keep and get their comp up. I know it sucks and happened to me as well. But it is what it is.

Anybody here have the 6 month blocker in your confidentiality agreement with Amazon ? Where it says you are not allowed to join a competitor for 6 months post leaving Amazon ?
