I’m a new grad that joined G cloud in Jan and I am not performing well. Everyone on my team says WLB is very bad and I personally know 1 L3 and 2 L4 that have been threatened / put on PIP by my skip. I have an Amazon offer in Texas that starts in December. I know zon WLB is hellish but I wonder if it will even be any different from my G cloud team…? Should I leave G cloud and risk it all at amazon? Bonus factors: 1. I miss Texas and CoL + QoL is so much better than here in Seattle 2. I could prob buy a house within a year in TX Compared to 5+ years of saving in Seattle 3. I could use the 1 yoe I gain here at G to possibly survive at amzn? I just feel like I’m at the amazon of google (cloud) anyways right now. I also don’t see myself meeting expectations and perform about as well as the other L3 on PIP. Current G TC : 200k (can’t afford house) Amazon Tx TC: 184k (affords 3 bedroom house) #google #amazon #pip #wlb
Try moving teams within G maybe?
Currently impossible due to frozen headcount. Even more impossible for an L3. Are you a new grad experiencing amazon horror story?
You will be cannon fodder at amzn. They take L4s, throw them in the water and see who can swim. The rest is out - on pip, laid off, or leaving themselves due to stress. I do see why you want to go back to TX. I moved from TX to Seattle and felt depressed for the first 2-3 years. It gets better with time. Now here more than a decade.
Don’t get me wrong, some L4s make it here. I survived. You will too if you are a tough cookie.
I am not a tough cookie I am a p*ssy b*tch. You have been at amazon for a decade? Why not leave? Also how do I survive if I git gud by December and want to try and survive zon?
Google Cloud is garbage man of course go to Amazon AWS #1
Two things- 1. Amazon has PIP 2. WLB at Amazon sucks. You will regret leaving google for amazon. If you don’t like google go find something else.
As you can see from my post 1. My team has PIP 2. My teams WLB sucks So I get what you’re saying but google cloud is just amazon with a pretty google bow on it
Yeah, that’s what I was saying. You do not feel any different switching to Amazon. Ex-Amazon employee, had to deal with my manager calling me at nights and weekends, worked 50-60 hours per week, definitely a top 5 performer in a team of 20 but my manager barely gave me “meets the bar” during annual reviews. And not to mention, < 1% annual pay raises 🤦🏻♂️ I felt like I’m being exploited and chose to quit already. I took my parental leave at a time frame when my manager insisted me to stay and keep working. After I returned he threatened to put me on PIP. 4 weeks later, I pinged him and said “bye bye loser!”
Blind will kill me for saying this but a change is always good to see how things work on the other side. You never know what would fit you if you stick to the same shit and get comfortable. Trying new things, fumbling and learning from mistakes is how you live.
Any tips to survive as an L4 if I make the switch?
Might be a from-pot-into-fire situation, always a rough WLB in cloud space no matter the company. I know it's tough right now and you can't move, but if you can hold out you'll have more options internally at Google.
I am honestly trying my best yet fear it will still not be enough. Guess it’s just like that sometimes 🫡
Find another team at G!
Any of the cloud service teams have terrible WLB. If the amazon one isn’t AWS then jump ship
I hear all amazon orgs are ass tho? :(
No it’s all team dependent, there are definitely chill teams with lower expectations at amazon where you can ramp up and learn to be a swe at a more leisurely pace. I was lucky to start my career that way cuz I was a shit coder out of college and had a lot to learn

Uh oh: President Trump leads Biden 49% to 43% in a two-way race.
It always feels you are not in the right spot, try to storm through that otherwise we get the urge to move out every time we are out of comfort zone which is okay but will make us a weak engineer over time. Try to get things right at G so you can aim for promo if its not working jump to Amazon for a fresh start
You’re right I’m very uncomfortable and I should try to push through. I want to give G cloud a genuine shot for this year but I worry that if I do not perform well I could be put on PIP at 9 month mark. If that happens I should obviously switch to amazon
