Anyone have reservations about leaving their company as the economic outlook sours with hiring freezes across tech? I have a few offers from firms like PayPal, Shopify, etc. - around 20% higher comp for companies with slightly better reputations in tech. I’ve been growing bored at Visa and definitely am underpaid, but wlb and job security are unbeatable. Should I just push for internal promos or team mobility and wait for that July raise, or just go even with hiring freezes on the horizon. PayPal already made the news for layoffs which has me 🥶 No visa concerns and no dependents YOE: 2 TC: 130k
Quite frankly, why are you still at VISA? Even if you did not have offers, you should be asking yourself why you have not already left. I cannot imagine that VISA will provide you with any kind of growth opportunities that you would be exposed to at other more interesting tech companies.
OP explained it in the post lol. And I second that Pay is 🥜 but job security and wlb is really unbeatable. I can literally completely the next 1 month worth of work in 30 hours tops. Ofcourse I’m not growing or learning anything, but have tons of time for other stuff. So OP is asking if it’s a good time to move given the market conditions, knowing the fact that being at Visa = stagnation
Exactly - and while PayPal isn’t a Stripe or a Square in terms tech experience, it is a step up from Visa. Throw in an interesting team and an immediate jump from 130k TC to 160k is no small feat
PayPal recently fired a lot of teams in California and remote positions. If I were you, I would look for something more stable.
Fortune favors the brave
Used to be my favorite saying
Money comes and goes but security and well being aren’t as easy to find. I say push for promo or additional comp. telling them you got 20% or so. best of both world.
Ask yourself if your life would be significantly different with 30k more per year. Then ask if it would be significantly different being jobless
30k is significant; don’t get it twisted by people on this forum who’s average income is significantly higher than the rest of the population and will try to downplay it. That being said, I’d focus on learning and growing. If you’re not getting that at your current company then it’s time to move.
I took the risk. Joining a pre ipo tomorrow. But I have more yoe than you. Also my manager at Amazon says he’s happy for me to return anytime if things don’t go well in the new job.
Did your manager propose this or did you hint/ask/etc? I am leaving for a pre ipo too and would like to give a hint to my manager and skip. Any advice on approaching this?
Age? Since you mentioned no dependents I’d assume you are still in your 20s or early 30s. If that then you should weigh if 20% is enough for you to switch. If you are in your 20s imo you should switch. If in your early 30s then imo you should only switch if it’s like 25-30% hike. Any age group older than this especially with dependents imo should just put their heads down and survive the bad economy.
Early 20s
This is solid advice
20 percent is not a great amount to jump ship imo
If you don't need extra money, now doesn't seem like a good time to chase extra money. As the new person, if shit goes south, you're on the chopping block. I'm honestly surprised even PayPal might be cutting people. But that's just me, I'm pretty risk averse, I've been homeless before.
