I'm looking for a HR or legal expertise here but personal experience is welcomed. I've been with IBM for 5 years and haven't had a single penny for a raise. I have applied for over 1000 internal openings (seriously, over 1000) in these past years and I have been contacted back probably less than 10 times total. I feel like I am stuck and the only way is out, which tbh breaks my heart because I still love the company but I've been treated with a lot of disrespect and indifference (there's more to it but I don't want to get into the details for the sake of anonymity) . I feel that if I leave, I'll never want to come back, and judging by the lack of success in trying, I won't ever be able to anyway. So I wonder if I should just take my vacation and plan it as I start a new job and simply ghost IBM or if this would actually make me lose money. All these years without even inflation adjustment in pay made me very tied on money so I cannot afford to put in a notice and get let go before the time is up too. I don't care about ethics or burning bridges at this point because I've done everything I could within and got nothing but the cold shoulder, so why respect an organization that doesn't give a rat's a$$ to me? All I want is to get the max amount of money I am entitled to without having the company screwing me over some more on the way out.
Put in the notice, if you're let go before time is up, you will still be paid for it. Moreover, your vacation will be paid out to you in cash if you don't take it.
This is good.. Assuming IBM encashes your unused vacation days..
I don't think the employer is obligated to pay for the remaining of your notice. Do you have any info on this? A team member got booted last winter and he got no notice, no warning and no severance.
Do you have a new job lined up?
Not yet. I'd only do this once a new job offer is set.
Just stop showing up and see when they will notice. I have known people that got away with it for months.
Do leet code, find a better job, but put in your two weeks notice when you find something better. Don't burn bridges - basic game theory. You lose more than you gain when you don't act professional.
I know the higher grounds really sounds like the best thing to do. I'm just so sick of trying so hard to move up and get let down, I don't even understand why, nobody tells me anything or how to get better in here. It's always do more, you're scolded if you don't get it right but you're invisible if you do.
Honestly OP you just need to suck it up and do what elatedowl suggested above. You're not the first person with a shitty job. That's the hard reality. Get yourself ready to interview, land a better role, and exit your current job professionally. That's really the only reasonable thing to do.
2 weeks is not alot of time. Line up a nice gig, put in your 2 weeks and be professional. They might not have been, doesn't mean you should do the same. It comes down to you and the value and morals you hold true to yourself.
Fuck the morals to give where there aren't any received. Clean conscience on this. If I was treated right, I'd never even consider leaving like this!
Can you "work remotely" and find a second job? You can draw 2 pay checks that way. I am all for sticking it to the man but this has significant risks
Yes, I'm interviewing for other jobs and once I get an offer, I thought about milking it out as much as possible
Illegal to switch jobs? Lol ok... Job abandonment is shady, sure, but not illegal.
