Joining OC next week with a small comp bump (which is now negated due to the meteoric rise in Amazon stock) and also because I wanted to learn how to build distributed services from scratch. Learned a lot at AWS and I am excited to apply those principles elsewhere. Sad for leaving a gold mine (unvested stocks) but I feel Amazon wouldn’t be handing out any more stock bonuses since my expected salary for next year is already out of band. Any tips from folks in Oracle Cloud or from ex-Amazonians in general? TC: 209K YoE: 6yrs #software #oracleoci #amazonaws #oraclecloud
Are you on visa? How stable is OCI?
Stability is a risk but I’m not too concerned as there are always other companies to jump ship. COVID has definitely slowed down hiring but I’m willing to take a risk
I see them similar since Aws is also susceptible to more stress. Oci as a business is Defn going for the drain. But if not in visa, then OCI is better
🤮
Is it that bad? Can you be more specific ??
It’s nice. Lots of work to do and learn
Anything in particular to look out for?
Just regular office politics. If you’re worried about work to do, there’s more than enough stuff to keep you busy. Looking for anything in particular?
I did the same move, and OCI is no better than AWS. Oracle will never compete in cloud. Technology is joke compared to AWS. Dev tools are joke. The stocks are flat. The company is defunct. Silent layoffs everywhere. Just don't.
I see. It also means there’s a lot to innovate depending on the culture. AWS was great compensation and stability wise but I always felt that all fundamental blocks have been built and it’s more like repackaging stuff now. I am really going to miss the dev tools though.
Based on the org things move fast and there is a large scope of ownership. Just ignore the office politics and do your job and you’ll be fine
With no significant comp bump and Oracle being a sinking ship. Sounds like a risky move. Good luck
Oracle ain’t a sinking ship bruh. Saas revenue is close to 10 bill and growing faster than workday, sap. Oci powers those and is slowly gaining momentum and our dB is still the best and will remain so
Thanks! It’s indeed risky but I’m hoping I’ll be able to make the best of it
Any idea about OCI Data Science team (AWS SageMaker equivalent)
If it's anything like OFSAA run away 🤣
What level at OCI?
OCI is good! I left Amazon too for OCI, it’s been an year. I have got so much work and a lot of credits, call outs and good reviews. Largely depends on the org as well.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Welcome to OCI. Half of OCI are ex-Amazonians. Generally, it's much better environment than Amazon.
If there are Amazon managers at Oracle, then how it is a better environment at Oracle than Amazon? Need more explanation here.
Because we have don't be jerk in our Lp.
