I’m planning to leave Google and join Amazon as an L5(SDE-2) as Amazon is offering me 2x of what I’m currently making at Google. I’m up for promo (L3-L4) in next 2-3 months at Google and that too won’t increase my compensation by much as I’ll get the lower band of what an L4 makes. My plan is to join Amazon now and try to join back Google back after 2-3 months as an L4 on the negotiated salary. I have few questions to ask- 1.) Is that the right move to make as I’m enjoying my work at Google but the comp difference seems pretty high. 2.) If I want to join back as an L4, what is the process around that ? Will they exempt some round of interviews, if I join back after 2-3 months. I know for joining the same level within an year there are no round of interviews at all, but what about L+1 level change. (My manager is keen to take me in his team) 3.) Is it possible to negotiate on the Amazon salary? YOE - 2 years TC Google India - 40 lpa TC Amazon (SDE-2) - 78 lpa Expected TC after promotion - 50lpa Edit1: I have the option to join AWS cloudfront or Alexa Voices team, any suggestions on what to join and pros and cons for each of them ? #engineering #software #swe
Can you try negotiating at the time of promotion at Google. Switching to Amazon is risky as Google down level a lot these days, a slight mistake and you are done. Also you won’t be enjoying at Amazon so staying there is not an option
I’m one of the high performers at Google, they usually consider all the performance reviews is what I know. Asking for hike during promo is not an option, as they say the salary is decided by the tool for promo candidates. Also, I have seen Google India is expanding very rapidly, so I don’t see an option of down level too.
Downlevel happens a lot unless you are Senior L6 or L7.
You don’t need to return the bonus if you leave before 12 months?
It's paid monthly, either way, he's trying to increase the tc, he can negotiate higher with the Amazon tc.
No, it’s paid on monthly basis.
How close are you to a promo? If you're sure it'll happen in the coming cycle, wait it out. But if you return without an interview, Google will not change the comp. Also Google L4 external offers top at around 80 LPA these days, that too with strong competing offers and 5+ yoe. It's better to join Amazon with the intention of sticking around till you become L6. Once you're L6 directly try interviewing for staff levels elsewhere.
My friend got 90 with 2 yoe without even a single competing offer
The interview was perfect + previous company was a tier 1, most likely scenario. Also helps if your prior work is in the same domain and you have a awesome recruiter. These are exceptions not the rule. 95 LPA is the start of L5 band for SWEs
Did have any competing offer? What was Amazon’s initial offer?
I don’t remember the initial offer as this was rolled out to me long back. Back at that time I had the similar offer with Uber too.
Stay at google. Use the offer to get higher TC.
Wait wtf google expected compensation is 50 lpa on promo? 😂 so they lowball promos too, not just external hires
Will you do the same thing for L5 as well?
Did you join Google as a new grad in 2020?
This is top of the band for Amazon SDE2(54 - 79). Higher than this will require VP approval which is unlikely to happen for your yoe. For G, you need to re interview if coming back at an L+1 level. Not sure about exceptions to this rule.
Amazon TC breakup please

Wow, first time seeing this tc for Amazon at 2 yoe.
