I'm in the process of interviewing for a senior management role at Vanguard. Compared to Google, there is very little information about job ladders, levels, compensation, and careers at Vanguard. Can anyone share insight about the number of levels and salary expectations, especially at the more senior level for management? Thanks! TC: 400K
Looking at the highest technical manager for example TM06 not sure what grade you would be, Base: 191-321k Bonus target: 30% Partnership: 12k 1-5 years, 18k 6+ years Partnership will then have some multiplier based on market/ company performance, let's assume 2x. Other notable benefits is 10% 401k contribution with an additional 4% match. Then for an idea of mid way would be TM03, 100k - 180k, 12%, 5.5k / 8.25k
10% 401k contribution is vested over 6 years, at least for a level 2, maybe it’s different for high levels
Awesome, that’s very helpful! Does “TM” stand for technical management? Is there a different ladder for directors/officers that goes higher than that?
Did you bother to check: https://www.levels.fyi/companies/vanguard/salaries/software-engineer
I did “bother” to check levels.fyi, did you? It has no information about senior management comp
If comp is that important, go somewhere else. You dont need to see the numbers. You will take a massive paycut here.
I think they get paid decently, but I don’t think you’ll like it. It’s a hot mess and their technology is very outdated. It’s high on office politics, and everyone there has been working there for decades. most other people leave, i would really advise you stay in google
Google has a lot of those challenges actually. Tech that’s been static for a while, difficulty making organizational or technical change, execs messing with projects just to say they did something. Can you give me a few concrete examples of politics you think negatively impacts your progress?
The only reason worth leaving Vanguard for google is work life balance.
What do you do there? Do you like what you do?
I got this wording backwards, meant “worth leaving google for Vanguard is work life balance”. I’m SWE. I’ve had a great experience but I’m able to be remote. If they made RTO mandatory, I’d have to move and probably wouldn’t. People complain that it’s too political but I think that’s because it values tenure more than other places. You’re 10% retirement match doesn’t fully vest until year 6. I actually think Vanguard would be a great destination for FAANG engineers who have saved up a good amount of $ and want more time to spend with their family. Hard to take the pay cut for many though.
Those questions need to be asked to the recruiter and hiring manager. Unless they're looking to put you into the executive pipeline, you likely won't be moving up. $400k is already a lot for VG and they'll likely stick you at your current level forever. There are pay ranges for each level and I'm guessing you'll be near the top of the range, so your merit increases will likely be lower than inflation too.
Know this is an old thread but just checking if this is something you pursued OP? If yes, are you already in VG?

i always thought vanguard paid significantly lower than fang. Is there a reason for the move? Job security?
That’s a fair question. I don’t love how huge Google is, and I’d like to move to the main line of PA rather than working remotely or in any locations where Google has an office
