Liberal bias in SF and Silicon Valley

I don’t feel that politics should be part of work life but it seems that after this last election it’s difficult to escape. As a closeted republican, of course it’s hard living and working in SF. If you’re in the same boat as me, do you bite your tongue or speak your mind? Do you feel like it’s assumed that you’re in one camp or another?

Politics is a part of everything. It is logically impossible for politics not to be a part of work life or anything else (sports, religion, etc)

Amazon Hooliganss May 16, 2018

It was separated fairly well up until about 5-10 years ago, at least more so than today.

CareerBuilder AgnewsHead May 16, 2018

No it wasn't. Don't conflate people not talking about it 5 years ago with lack of politics.

Facebook Nrxifefjbe May 16, 2018

Stay in the closet, don’t want your opinions.

Salesforce icedcoffee OP May 16, 2018

But yours are ok? I’m asking honestly

Facebook Nrxifefjbe May 16, 2018

And I’m telling you honestly

People rarely change their mind on things. You may give them an aha moment every once in a while by sharing a perspective that they didn’t consider but it seems like most people can’t internalize that info enough to shift their own opinion. I usually change the subject when politics come up or let people make assumptions about my stance without correcting them because I don’t really care if they know what I really think on politics, but I also don’t engage or encourage those discussions so I can keep from being their go-to person when they want to talk politics.

Facebook Lleoiww May 16, 2018

What are your opinions?

Apple metafor May 16, 2018

Though I’m not a republican, I’m more centrist than most liberals. I don’t really hold my tongue but I also don’t speak in absolutes. I find that helpful in any discussion and generally results in discussion rather than disagreement. And you’d be surprised how much supposed liberals actually agree with traditional republicans values, especially those in tech

Uber DAmZP3 May 16, 2018

But they thought they are liberals. They just fake ones.

Salesforce icedcoffee OP May 16, 2018

Ok. Well I’m definitely not far right. And I don’t want to change anybody’s mind. I just think everyone’s opinions should matter. If you’re going to preach inclusiveness, it should be applied to everyone... including those who have different perspectives than you.

Salesforce H57ffgF1 May 16, 2018

I agree somewhat. There are conservative opinions I openly agree with, and ones that I am vehemently opposed to. Since most of the conservative viewpoint on social issues boils down to "Bible says this so you have to do this", you can't expect much support.

Apple Kugdbhfhjb May 16, 2018

When you say everyone's opinion matters, I would ask what is the quality of those opinions? Those Nazis with tiki torches had opinions too. And that debate was settled nearly a century ago. So if your political opinions are reasonable, you'll find that people will be willing to hear you out.

Reality has a well known liberal bias.

Hired secret_use May 16, 2018

It’s kind of terrifying to think about how companies are becoming so powerful and diminishing peoples rights to the point that it becomes necessary to forgo the First Amendment for what is probably one of its primary goals (freedom of political discourse). Of course it’s always wise to be tactful and discuss issues in a way that fits with the environment (i.e. probably not the best idea to discuss wedge issues or issues that are likely to be highly personal or offensive to someone, good to figure out where the individuals you are speaking to stand). But generally, I think there is a bad ethos in work environments in America that imposes certain norms that are harmful to the general wellbeing of society

Hired secret_use May 16, 2018

Being a conservative doesn’t mean everything you say is hate speech, that’s such a backwards claim to make

Hired secret_use May 16, 2018

Sure, but I doubt those people are smart enough to work in FANG

Apple MAGA2014 May 16, 2018

Speak your mind. But speak to them face-to- face. And don’t forget basic human decency. And empathy. And that humans are crazy weird, each one’s mind a “bulb of dread and dream”. Speak, mi amigo, speak.

Amazon DirTSanchz May 16, 2018

It depends. Are you a conservative with actual values? I have several of those as friends and value their opinion. Or are you a supporter of the current administration? In that case hiding probably makes more sense

BigCommerce Hizzo May 16, 2018

Why?

Amazon DirTSanchz May 16, 2018

Naa, I’ll pass. This sums it up pretty well. https://twitter.com/goodoldcatchy/status/996739820935266305
