LinkedIn Invite

Why do people INVITE me to connect on LinkedIn, and after I accept THEIR invitation.....I send a message introducing myself w/ a follow-up question and then they never respond? Like what was the point of asking me to connect if they have no intention of actually interacting with me.... Am I missing something? What other purpose would having a connection serve?

Wow you must be a really nice person. It’s the opposite with me. I introduce myself and thank them for accepting my request and never get a response. Different worlds!

I always respond to all non-automated messages on LinkedIn. I mean, why not? I just act how I would in real life. If someone takes the time to greet me or show interest in speaking to me, of course I would respond....

You’re a good person OP.

IBM fTaY55 Mar 19, 2018

They are doing it via automation. In order to drive up their connection count/network size. Who knows why.

IBM eicnsh OP Mar 19, 2018

Yea probably. That's so lame.

Microsoft qwgT50 Mar 19, 2018

Yea youre not supposed to add people you never actually worked with or met. Youre doing it wrongg

Microsoft Lessonzz Mar 19, 2018

I don’t even accept the connection invitation if it was from someone I have never talked to.

IBM eicnsh OP Mar 19, 2018

Yes I like meeting new people. So I didn't want to miss an opportunity to meet someone and form a potentially beneficial relationship.. Damn I sound desperate lol.

Microsoft Lessonzz Mar 19, 2018

I would be careful. You don’t know why they are trying to make connection with you. Your data might have been sold to someone else. Or the person who connected to you might be a psychopath or criminal. He can use me as a mean to spam all of my connections as well. Also imagine someone using linkedin profile for nudity etc. you will be embarrassed that you look like maintaining connection with the freak.

I noticed this many times. Probably they will get your info and sell it somewhere. Probably LinkedIn is waste but I did get a couple of calls through LinkedIn which later turned into offers.

Ever seen that “mass add” thing on LinkedIn where it sends out invites to everyone in a contacts list? That’s probably what happened. Super annoying.

This is done to expand their social networks. Adding you as friend makes them easier to contact people who were outside of their network before (now 3rd, 2nd etc)

Microsoft BarFoo Mar 19, 2018

I don’t accept invitations from people I don’t know. Recruiters are the worst offenders - always wanting to connect and not even sending me a feeler first.

Axtria s.hawkingg Mar 19, 2018

@OP I would like to connect with you on LinkedIn. When you send me a message first, it will restore my faith in humanity.

IBM eicnsh OP Mar 19, 2018

Lol. Are you making fun of me?

Axtria s.hawkingg Mar 19, 2018

@OP No, not at all. I was just trying to be funny. What you do is really amazing, and I haven't come across anyone else who does that. Usually it is the other way around. It's a pretty nice and humble gesture. I hope you continue to do it. I will also try.

LinkedIn is a multi billion dollar spam platform

Amazon M67gq98 Mar 19, 2018

That also gives Microsoft pretty good insight into when people might be looking to leave a job.
