LinkedIn networking

Hello everyone, I wanted to know what's the best way to network in LinkedIn I'm mainly interested in research/data/analytics positions in big tech companies. So far only only one head of a research group answered me, he asked me to apply when positions are available in their website and to send him a message afterwards. I wanted to know who are to best people to add/ send a msg to on linkedin, and what to say ? in order to be able to have an interview Thank you so much ! #amazon #microsoft #google #linkedin #linkedinhiring #networking #referral

Another alternative is to ask here for referrals.

And do referrals also work for research jobs ? I mean if someone's a SWE at G can he refers me to Google Research/ Brain, or should he be working in research ?

Are you asking to network or a job? Those are two different things.

I'm asking to network but I'm assuming a better network --> more chances to get interviews. Am I wrong ?

If you are actually networking then yes a stronger network can help. If you are just requesting to connect and not fostering any sort of relationship with that person how will that help you?

Why not do both? Look at your current network and see if you know anyone who is working at companies that you're interested in? Reach out and at the right time bring it up. You can probably ask on Blind as well if you don't have a contact at that particular company. Additionally, reach out and network with people who may have similar experience, job trajectories or positions that you're interested in and learn about them and their experiences. They may be able to provide you insight as to what to focus on and what is valued in an interview, when applying, or with a particular team. If things go well, you will know them well enough that they might refer you. For me, if I know you somewhat and you seem competent and driven, I'd have no issue referring. Also, there is sometimes a financial incentive to refer if the candidate gets and accepts an offer.

Thank you! That's a very clear and complete answer. I'll definitely do this

On LinkedIn, I recommend finding a mutual friend or connection and have that person intro you. Cold messages rarely works.
