Lockheed Martin Space - Current hiring environment?

15 YoE SWE looking to join LM - Space as an L4 (staff or associate manager), preferably embedded role close to hardware. No aerospace or defense experience, although I previously held a TS clearance. LM recruitment process has been odd. A single 1 hour interview and that's it, no real deep technical interviews. Also, has been near impossible to get ahold of the numerous recruiters I have assigned to me or even understand what their role is in the process. I'm curious if this is the norm? I'm also curious what the hiring environment is like right now. Several roles I applied to were cancelled instead of filled. One they wanted to extend an offer but I asked to do another interview first then they cancelled the original position while I was waiting on the second interview. I know there's a few new teams and product lines, maybe they're trying to figure things out? #space #software #hiring

Can I DM for a referral?

That sounds similar to my experience.

Thanks - It looks like you still got in though so that's encouraging. I'm probably going to branch out and apply to some other companies now that these few roles have been in flight for 1-2 months. I've been holding back applying to others because Lockheed is so slow I kinda need to give them a real headstart otherwise I'm going to end up with a bird in hand situation with a different offer.

Honestly our hiring process is horrible. You’re better off networking with a hiring manager or employee directly because our recruiters are overworked and have zero bandwidth for nurturing candidates. Plus - there is a reorg going on right now in Space.

Thanks for the feedback - Interesting idea networking directly with someone internal. I have had some contact with a hiring manager there. I'm trying to balance not abusing their willingness to share information while showing my interest in their positions. I'm not sure how to find any others aside from blindly connecting to people on LinkedIn which I can find a bit off-putting. I'm interested that space is doing a reorg. I applied almost exclusively to space positions and it seems like everything was going really fast then all of a sudden full-stop and recruiters have been ghosting me. Any idea when the dust will settle?

Second that our hiring process is terrible. It heavily promotes internal hiring and a manager has to jump through a lot of hoops to even get to interviewing external applicants. It's very normal to have little to no technical questions in an interview except related to your previous work experience. 15yoe is right at the borderline between level 4 and level 5, so I'd open up your search to include level 5 reqs. The fact that you had a TS in the past doesn't really have any impact if it hasn't been active in the last 2 years or the investigation was more than 5 years ago. I'm not sure what impact the space reorg has had on recruiting but I don't see it being completed in the near term. In the meantime our contacts are all still going so I think it's more you're just seeing signs of our inept HR department combined with forced internal hires
