Currently in NYC. Is it worth moving to London for a pay cut? All values are in USD: London: 280k TC NYC: 330k TC YoE: 2.5
That's really good TC for 2.5 YOE
Right, where are you working making that sort of bank?
London is nice but pricey. If not a Brit and married with family it becomes problematic, especially with older children. Twenty years ago the story was different. However, if not married and opportunity looks good then try two years there. Quite a nice place to live.
Does this tc include med insurance 401k etc? Because it seems a bit inflated
You'll live good in London on that TC. Someone soon will jump in here and tell you taxes are high, don't come; and they are partially right, they are high, but there are a lot of good UK investment vehicles. You can put 60k GBP per year into your UK pension (401k) equivalent. You can also put 20k GBP per year into an ISA, which is a special account in which everything that happens inside is free from capital gains or dividend tax.
I was about to comment it depends on your age, and then saw 2.5yoe. Go for it, it will be a good experience, and you don’t have to stay forever!
280k TC in london you’ll live like a king. To be in the top 1% of earners in the U.K, you have to earn £160k, with the top 0.5% earning above £236k… so trust me, you’ll live like a king. For comparison, the top 1% in NYC earns $776k I won’t get into the subjective points which might make each city more desirable. But based on TC alone, it should be a bit of a no Brainer if there’s no family reasons to stay in NYC
You are comparing the top 1% in the entire country (UK) with the top 1% in the most expensive city in the USA. Top 1% in London is higher than 160k
It’s a fair point. Was hard to get london specific. Regardless, he may be 0.5% london, instead of 0.2% national. London average wage is 51k vs National 41k, so not that far away, compared to the whole of the US vs NYC. Anyway, once you’re getting into 200k+, regardless you’re incredibly rich. Especially, if their YOE suggests they’re a younger person, that money without a family, kids, mortgage etc.. you’re living like a king. You are right. It’s not complete apple to apples, but perhaps not apples to oranges
If you get laid off in London you won't be able to get that salary again. Pro-London people voting obviously have never lived or worked there before. Wages are abysmal and costs are ridiculous. If you think NYC or SF is bad, London is 100x worse even if you're White. Extreme wealth inequality and massively dysfunctional employers galore
Even if your white? Being white is a disadvantage here, as it is back in the US
Being white is absolutely an advantage in London, don’t believe the right wing nonsense
Stay in NYC. For all of the flaws of that city, it has the benefit of being attached to America, which is in a better spot politically than London (and greater Britain). For that pay cut, you would be sacrificing a lot of connections and benefits that you can get in NYC, and I doubt you would be able to brush heads with Oxbridge heads due to being nouveau riche. Couple that with the rough state of UK at the moment (in many ways), and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the country. The only way it could possibly work is maybe living closer to Europe, but I would still take America and many of the states near NYC or adjacent to it (San Francisco, Miami, etc.) based on career growth and outlook. Best of luck! TC: 105K USD
Brah we got a dementia patient with a crack head son as president running against trump with his great many flaws... I think the UK a safer bet.
That simply isn’t true. Whatever the outcome of the election, you can insulate yourself from it (based on your political beliefs). In the UK, you don’t have that luxury; even if you could, you’re still going to have to contend with the effects of politics (namely the economy).
London is shithole, expensive claustrophobic, disgusting uk trash. How did you choose the worst European city?!
And what's NYC?
Slightly better scam to London.
London seems more expensive. You can get much cheaper places in NYC especially if you move into boroughs that are 10 mins from Central Park. Pizza is better in NY.
London is nowhere near as expensive as NYC
