London to US or India after instagram layoffs
Seeing all instagram teams in UK getting affected, I'm thinking of taking up an opportunity to move to US on L1 visa in case my department folds too. Indications are bad. Some questions regarding this 1. IC5 eng, will I be getting L1A or L1B 2. Is L1A better to get GC than L1B (I'm born in India) 3. Can I switch visa type later and under what circumstances 4. Can my wife work with my L1 visa 5. Where can I find more assistance on these visa related topics 6. Would you suggest moving to India which seems very appealing right now, no visa stress.
L1 is sponsored by the company. What makes you think that you will be safe from the layoff? Even if you’re safe, why would a company which is trying to save costs sponsor your relocation to the US and also pay you 2x the salary.

To answer one of your questions, as an IC you will get L1B. L1A is better for GC (eb1) which has a priority date of Jan 2022 I believe for India. You can forget about a green card as an Indian with EB2 or 3, which is what you will be. You cannot change companies with L1 but I hope meta tries for your H1b. H1 is a lottery and it’s getting difficult every year to get it, since you do not have masters your probability reduces. That’s another headache.
@op: I think only M1/M2 folks get it but only immigration team can know for sure 2. L1A is better. You can file GC through EB1C 3. you will have to go through lottery to switch to H1B. L1 visas have a duration of 7 years I think and you need to get your GC before that . I don’t think you can keep extending your visa like H1B folks 4. Yes 5. Google , your immigration team 6. It’s extremely risky to come with meta’s L1. L1 visas are tied to employers and if you are in the next round, basically you and your wife will have to go back immediately. You can’t switch to another employer like how h1 folks can do in 60 days Finally meta and Dol (Department of labor) seem to have a tug of war on immigration. They scrutinize meta folks more than anyone in the US. If you get L1A you can file through EB1C and you don’t have the PERM process . If you have to file in EB2 , forget your GC and forget even about the PERM process.
L1A if you are a manager. Filling immigration in EB1C is what's required to get it faster. Your office can file you under EB1C category irrespective of your L1A or B status. Yes she can work the day she steps in US as an L2 (L1 dependent). No EAD or any such requirement. Don't go on this rabbit hole, that said, chat gpt or Google is best. You'll get the assistance from your office as they have sweet processes that are followed for all employees since decades. It isn't worth doing due diligence without any decision at hand. India is the best. Earning about $200k in US (in California or NY) is the same as earning about 1 crore in India. In US, you end up paying about 40% on taxes, 40% on house, car, and food... And expect to do all the chores for the rest of your life here. In the long term, if you value trekking and clubbing, and fancy being a player. US is the best. Else if you fancy a life of comfort and the chaos of Indian household. India is the best.
Btw I meant 200k household income, not with stocks. US pay a lot of stocks, so the best would be too get stocks and move to India...coz stocks are not reversed once awarded. In India I do see the same profile in US is being offered 1cr pretax income - hence used that number. Example an L7 tech.

Instagram is being hit with layoffs in the US too. Why would Meta, in its year of efficiency, incur relocation costs to add to its US headcount?
