Low performers at Google/Microsoft

How do companies at Google/Microsoft deal with low performers? My girlfriend is a SDE at Microsoft and I am shocked how chill her job is. She works maybe a few hours a week and spends the rest of the time on Pinterest or making us food. She went to Bali for 2 months for a “break” and didn’t even file PTO. She said she doesn’t care because there is no PIP there At Amazon I feel there is constant fires and pressure to work. Do some companies keep low performers around and can just rest/vest?

Are you in Azure? If not come to the dark side and you will see the rest of the company just working 24X7

Never understood this as well. The disparity in expectations for a small difference in pay is insane.

Microsoft pomm Oct 12, 2022

It's very org dependent.

Wlb at msft is incredibly org and team dependent. There are teams like your gf d is in and there are teams like yours at amazon. Low performers do get pipped through insufficient results and zero rewards end of year. It depends on manager of they want to pursue. HR will lose their mind if you try to fire someone without documentation and proof that you tried to help report. You can also survive ir and zr and which case you and your boss look great. Overall unlike amazon msft is not setup to create failures, it's setup to create successful employees benefiting themselves and Microsoft. Things may change if economy gets worse but even then firing people is unlikely they will likely use some algorithm to cut positions not seen as important. This would mostly impact coasters.

I wonder what people say in standups? And don't people feel like they're not getting respect from team mates and coworkers as everyone knows they're good for nothing.

Was she working from Bali? How do you get 2 months constant leave without PTO?

Amazon seattl3 OP Oct 13, 2022

Nope which blows my mind.

Wow dream team indeed😂 good for her

They don’t do anything. You can not perform for years on end and as long as when you interact with your manager you put on a smile and act like there’s effort you will continue to succeed To get fired (besides obvious violations) it requires a full year of manager saying you made insufficient results. There is a reason people refer to it as the retirement club and the place to rest and vest. There is no accountability

If she's slacking at work, she'll slack in life. Don't marry her else you'll soon be posting here cribbing about handling household chores.
