L64 M1 CTC: 1.15 Cr My manager asked me to start coding as M1s at microsoft are supposed to code as per him/her, but the strange part was received this feedback after a year of being M1 under my manager. Is this normal? Or is it a recent change from upper management? Not sure what to make of this feedback from my manager. #engineering #managers
Yeah as an M1 you never know what your going to get, sometimes the expectation is that of a team lead, sometimes is that of a manager.
What’s your YOE and what part of it were you in management role instead of IC
Generally I think non working M1-s are just a waste of money, sorry. Unless you manage like 10 people, but then you really shouldn't and the team should be split.
I manage 10+ folks and in my org managing folks above 6 and all is quite normal
I am not a fan of such huge teams but fine then, in that size it's understandable if you don't have much time to code. Well, I am not a fan of the idea of engineering managers in general. Tech lead >>>> manager. Managers should manage tech leads. Tech leads should work on the same stuff as everybody in the team. And generally teams shouldn't be bigger than ~6 person.
Main reason you should code is to keep your skills sharp so you can go back to IC if needed. And can pass interviews as well.
Also techies are self managed .. there is no need for a manager ..
Yoe?
11
Tc split?
Follow what your manager says or start looking. They may know of a looming reorg. 64 is mostly ICs, so unicorns can cease to exist after a reorg.
All Managers including you, write in connect and perspective what they have never mentioned in the past cycle. They put random and small things in area of improvement if couldn't find anything solid.
They should probably tell more managers to actually manage before asking them to code
This is a general consensus across the tech industry at the moment where they’re asking engineering managers to code
Or get laid off and join some financial firm and do trading or take up a marketing and sales job and show profits .. like can’t become an engg manager without any engg experience
