Offer

I'm bit confused about what to choose. Haven Life: NYC Manhattan Base - 135k Sign on Bonus - 15k Yearly bonus roughly 60% of base ( as per they mentioned ) MUFG : Charlotte NC Base 115k No sign on bonus Upto 20k YOE - 3 . I'm pretty confused because of the location and company stability. Haven Life is startup , backed by MassMutual not sure about their stability. Comparing it with MUFG -bank it's pretty big & Stable . Moreover location NYC is expensive and crowded. Charlotte is better than NYC Manhattan. Location and stability is what bothering to go for Haven Life. Let me know your thoughts. Edit : I'm on Work visa, lost job in COVID . that's why thinking of risking . Thanks. #software #engineering

You’re young. Take a risk.

I'm 28 actually with Master. Completely tired after losing job by Covid and finally got this offer . That's why bit reluctant about location and company. Any idea about Haven Life ?

Honestly no idea about the company. But 28 is young! Depends on what and where you want to live tbh.

NYC better for career and dating.

I wouldn’t consider Haven Life a true start up. They’re wholly owned by Mass Mutual. They’re very confident in their job security and the idea that they’ll be around in 50+ years. Also, CLT and NYC are very different cities. That factor alone should probably be enough to drive your decision.

Honestly , I don't like NYC due to the crowd & being expensive but I couldn't miss the offer . Also, Thought Haven Life TC would help for next destination in numbers.

I'll vote for Haven Life. I might be the best person to share some advice. I was a summer intern with Bank of America in Charlotte back in 2015. I can see the city is growing fast but still much less opportunities compared with NYC. Also I'm interviewing with Haven Life recently and I enjoyed talking the team. It is not a real start up, it is owned by MassMutual so your job is most likely secured. MUFG owns 25% of Morgan Stanley stocks so technically speaking I’m working for MUFG. I would say try to avoid fintech if you are looking for an actual career growth. The WLB is fine but the pay is low and things are moving slow as xxxx.

Thank you for your opinion.

I thought job security in MUFG is better than Haven Life. I might be wrong.

You may want to know their green card policy before you make the move. Assumed you may need employer sponsorship for your green card.

TE Connectivity DmWb27 OP Nov 25, 2020

Yes, I need sponsorship, MUFG mentioned they will do after an year . Haven Life said , they will start after 6 months.

Would you say the New Haven interview process would be good for practicing? I have a phone screen with them but I'm honestly not interested in moving to NYC, but kind of want to do the interview for practice.

Haven Life xPNY15 Oct 15, 2021

Hah, I took the Haven interview for practice as I had a VP role lined up at JPMC, but Haven basically matched the offer and is a much better place to work, so…

I will say I love the city and specifically wanted to move there. There’s no point to moving to New York and paying this high cost of living if you’re going to live in the suburbs.

NYC is great. It’s true Haven Life isn’t a true startup anymore being wholly owned by MassMutual. I think the bonus plan exists because there isn’t stock to offer being part of a mutual company, but cold hard cash is nice. We’ve exceeded 60% every year I’ve been with Haven. The one downside is that your bonus will be prorated the first year, and 1/3 is held back for a year, so your bonus pipeline isn’t totally full for a couple years. I was skeptical of the 60% claim before I joined, but it’s real.
