MPK or NYC?

I have an opportunity to relocate to NYC this fall with FB. Same exact job, just diff office. Not sure about it. Leaving HQ could stifle career growth. I’m IC5. The NY team sucks - though I would still work mostly with ppl in MPK&London. Weather is mehhh. Perks not as great. But nyc is better commute, more to do, more culture. Not a shithole like SF. 💩 Thoughts?

Huh? I’m so far off from retiring...

I moved to NYC from the bay/Seattle and I fucking hate it. Granted, NYC is a Very polarizing place. People either think it’s the best thing since sliced bread, or hate the fuck out of it. I find the biggest factor is where you live relative to what you want to do. I live in Brooklyn and exactly where I live is in the middle of a bunch of nothing, so going anywhere or doing anything is a 20-40 minute trip, one way, which blows. If you haven’t lived here, and you don’t have any friends here, I’d strongly recommend doing some research to see where you’d want to live, take a week off and get an Airbnb, and pseudo see what it’s like.

Thanks. Sounds like if you move it could change how you like it.

Maybe, but I feel NYC is overrated in general. If you make enough money that money isn’t something you worry about NYC is probably great because you can do literally whatever you want because everything you’d want is right here. I find people overvalue the “you can do the best of everything right here”, and undervalue how often you actually go and do the thing. If you’re one to go out and try all the things all the time then paying the premium of being here is maybe worth it. If you’re not a super outgoing person then it’s probably not. For me I fucking hate having to go to multiple grocery stores to get a small set of groceries because there’s no traditional stores and all the shorty bodegas have cheese that’s green all the time.

NYC > MPK in every single way

NYC is great (and my favorite city by far), but it is not for everyone. It might have to do with people having different ideas and expectations of the city. For people coming from suburbs, they find it difficult to transition from the comfort of having your own car and driving at your own time and convenience to getting in a subway with random people and following a schedule. Even for people coming from bigger cities like SF, they feel that it’s not too different and only a little bigger and only a little more populated. This cannot be more false. NYC is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and it is super dense. It is arguably the most expensive city to live in when you take into account rent cost and food. It can be lonely or boring if you don’t have friends or a community (though that might be true anywhere). With that said, there is a reason why people love the city. It has excellent night life, many different things to do, and lots of different kinds of people and food. There is a lot of history compared to areas in the West Coast, and there’s just that unexplainable “good vibe” you get when living in NYC. When talking about SF vs. NYC, there really is no comparison when it comes to the things I mentioned. SF becomes dead after evening rush hour when all tech workers go back home and is a ghost town on holidays. Weekends are okay, but NYC is the complete opposite - the city never sleeps. Each part of Manhattan is unique and special and each borough has its own appeal as well. Although I don’t fully agree when Jay Z says, “And since I made it here, I can make it anywhere..”, there is some truth to that. The hustle and bustle of living in a city like NYC can make living in other cities in America seem “easier”. DM if you have more questions.

NYC is amazing but it's one of the biggest tourist spots on the planet so you need to be cool with constantly dealing with braindead tourists from everywhere and it can get very annoying.

If the NYC team sucks, why are you even thinking of joining?
