Wife on H4 visa wants to do MS CS or MS DS. She graduated from a non Tier engg college in India and doesn’t have prior work experience, though her major was IT. Bay area location, preferring local state universities. She seems enthusiastic but I’m not sure if it would be too technical for her to complete a CS degree. I do want to support her but a bit unsure. I’m not a SDE myself so not the best person to advise her. Thoughts? Blind tax : 240K
Gre score?
Yet to appear, but based on mocks I would expect around 300 at best.
If that means quant is like 160 or so, then yes she's going to struggle. A good measure would be if she can study for a month or so and bring the quant score up. If she can, that's a good indicator she'll be able to do the same in a quantitative program.
Harvard or UPenn
Sure, but have you heard of a problem called low acceptance rate?
I remember when I was applying for MS CS and some helpful advisors told me "Stanford and CMU are pretty good - you should apply there".
It’s justified to be skeptical due to her background and large money you are going to put. She might be able to it but you don’t want to find out $50k later! Start with. Community college first and see how she does
Can someone on H4 visa go to community college? Also, what’s the difference going to be
We were thinking of state univs which would cost around 20k
Georgia tech
The online MSCS?
What are the cons in your view of OMSCS from Georgia Tech ?
CSU East Bay?
Sure, that is an option but my question is would MS CS be manageable for her or not
Yes many idiots get through MSCS degrees. If she is diligent and studies, she will manage. She will have to take some prerequisite courses before the actual Masters levels courses. Also FYI Some universities have a “bridge” program to help non CS majors make the transition. Does she have to attend work or have children?
Cut the losses and Get a new wife I would say .
Give a man a mask and he shalt 💩 from his mouth
Private Bay Area university will get her an alumni network worth its salt. But since you mention state school here is my advice. Assuming you can’t move to a specific part of the bay.Just go to the closest CSU/UC and call it a day. If you can move then UC Santa Barbara would be the best option. Then SJSU, then SFSU. Either way, she will have to perform at the top 10% of her class. including attending hackathons, events like grace hopper, join girls who code, join nerd clubs and society’s.
Do you mean placements are low for colleges like CSU or SJSU?
Pics or theres no wife
You gotta think out of the ‘Box’ and trust Rajesh
I can confirm, there is a wife
Probably a good idea for her to complete Harvard CS50 just to see if she’s cut out for this before investing thousands in an MS
Is that course actually free?
Yes
Sjsu
That requires GRE but so far her scores in mocks weren’t great. Would that be doable with low GRE?
Sjsu doesn't have the highest standards
