I was thinking of getting a masters in data science but I’m concerned that it would be superfluous with my BS in CS. I really want to get my masters to rub it into my family’s face but I also really enjoy school and education in general. I really try to learn things from YouTube and such but I can’t do it well. Thanks for any advice or criticism in advance.
Some companies require at least a MS for DS roles, but it's not that common. It shouldn't help much for product / experimentation DS roles, and ML DS roles will usually be out of reach without PhD. I'd say it's not worth it currently.
If you want to get a master's degree, get one in math, stats, or comp sci. No one thinks a DS degree is valuable.
I did a masters in analytics and landed a quant role
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
In your case a degree in a field that excites you makes more sense. You can use any degree plus a BS in CS to get a data science job easily. You can try neuroscience or computational neuroscience if you find it interesting
It won't help much with BS in CS
I would suggest waiting for a year until they launch a new masters degree in Generative AI 😜 But if you are actually interested in ML, go for a Masters in CS with an AI/ML/DS track. Alternatively, go for a masters in AR/VR.
Unless you want to get into research, it's not worth getting a graduate degree in CS.
Almost everyone with a Dunning Kruger effect is AI/ML specialist with no degree. I don't think it's worth it unless it's required by your current job. Even switching to DS roles requires real professional experience than college projects unless you want to start from scratch in your career
Masters in DS is useless unless you need visa sponsorship
Dude don’t listen to folks here, no degree is worthless. Education always helps and will always give you benefit. To share my experience, i got my first promotion in America which gave me 40% increase in my base salary since i was doing MS in Data. I also earned trust, recognition, learned new skills, created projects, developed relationships from my professors and made friends. No one can put a price on this, go forward get education in something which can be beneficial in your career and what you enjoy. You can find a degree which can offer you both. I left tech, but then joined tech again thanks to my MS. People will always be there to criticize you or pull you down. No need to hear negativity, just keep on moving forward.
I second this. It is painful how negative everyone is on this app. Getting an MS in DS is definitely not universally useless like everyone here is claiming.
Unless things have changed in the last couple of years I’d say it’s among the most worthless degrees to get in STEM, especially with a STEM undergrad.
What would you say is a great grad degree? I know it’s odd but I just want the masters as a badge rather to use it in my career.
I’m a DS, not a SWE so I don’t have a great answer for you in your shoes but from my standpoint I don’t think any are particularly great if you want to be in DS. Either you go into a more analytics role where the vast majority of folks have a BS, or you go into more applied ML roles which are mostly PhDs. For context, I have a MS in Econ, which I enjoyed, but not worth much to me professionally.
