What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
Hi fellow blinders, I am a 65 at Microsoft for two years and recently had an interview with Meta for an E5 MLE position. However, I have about 9 years of experience with a Ph.D and Post-Doc in ECE field, and I think I qualify for E6. My on-site signals and feedback were strong, and some interviewers indicated Level 6 according to the recruiter. But the recruiter said they decided E5 based on a phone screening by a non-MLE person who did 15 min behavioral and 40 min coding. Do you think there is a way to request for E6? Is it too much of a down-level? I have got an uncooperative recruiter who is not very helpful. #MSFT #META #FACEBOOK
9yoe + phd for sure qualifies on paper for E6. If you think the interview performance was great and you have the right skillset, then push back hard on E5. I know a lot of bachelors and masters with 4yoe who are E5. On the other hand, if you are penetrating into E6 comp band with E5 title, that’s a good deal too - from expectations and wlb point of view. E6 is a LOT of work fyi. I was an E6 at meta.
TC as Google vs meta? Are you now an L6 at Google or L7?
I also know plenty of 10 yoe engineers who are e5s, e5 just has a wide range at meta. Just to reiterate google’s points, e6 has high expectations. Expect 50-60 hours during the ramp up period. Once you get settled, it’s closer to 45-50, but building relationships takes time and extra effort.
You need to prepare to walk away from the E5.
Dont have any other solid offer yet
Dont let them lowball you. You will regret it even if e5 pay is 30% more than l65. Unfortunately leveling is not super flexible in big tech, so you either have to reinterview now or try after 6 months.
Are you saying based on experience?
Yes, but not msft to meta. Many years ago I joined amazon at a lower level (sde-1) because I didnt know better. I was miserable and had to work really hard, hop jobs to eventually catch up. It was frustrating.
How does a non technical person give a coding interview lol
I just reread that - and am also hella confused. AFAIK phone screens are always done by engineers. Usually the recruiter slots you into the e6 vs e5 loop.
I was interviewing for MLE position, and the person who did the phone screening was just a SDE. By non-tecnical, i meant a person with no MLE background. I was wondering how a person can judge my technical skills if that person has no clue about my work
Post-graduate degrees are disqualifying. You’re lucky you got E5.
You are not serious, right?
I mean, no, I’m not being serious. But there is a grain of truth in that people who spend a lot of time in academia tend not to be leaders and won’t thrive in leadership roles.
Make sure you want it - E6 has very very high expectations, and meta culture is not easy to pick up. You will be expected to build good relationships with both your org and xfn partners, and have significant team and org wide impact within 6 months-1 year, all the while adapting to a very different company culture than Microsoft. In order to have the required impact, you will need to convince people your ideas have merit and build your own work streams. If you do decide you want to pursue E6, make sure you don’t want an e5 offer, because the only leverage you’ll be able to have is that you won’t accept the current offer . Max E5 comp is close to 500k, which I’m guessing is much higher than your current comp. If you do decide to go this route, you’ll need to do an additional system design and most likely another behavioral interview. And if you don’t pass, it’ll be unlikely they offer you a downlevel.
L65 to E5 is a downlevel. As others pointed out you have to decide if you really want E6. Based on my experience it isn't that difficult if you get promoted to E6 as you get enough time to understand how the engineering culture is setup at Meta. I joined as an E4 and was part of the team for 2 years before I became an E6. I had seen quite a few new hire E6 who never got the hang of the culture as it's extremely bottom up. I would suggest going for E6 based on your background and interview result. Few things to do: - clearly state that you are not going to accept E5, risk of losing the offer - tell them that you are not sure about E5 and you intend to wait for other onsites to decide as they are E6 equivalent. You don't always need an offer for leverage. Making them feel you have other big options that are still in the mix is enough if you know how to play the game.
OP how you prepare for ml system design ?
My question was design ad prediction model. Unlike what every place says, the interviewer was more interested in the model and feautres and loss fuction and calibration and sequential data
Can I get the name of your recruiter?
It depends on if your recruiter wants to put in the effort to argue for you as E6
He said he had done it prior to the on-site. But on-site signal was very positive according to him. Can the hiring manage do smth here? I mean hm through team matching?
No, your recruiter needs VP sign off as E6, and the recruiter is the one who needs to convince the VP of this. The question is are they willing to try?
