MSFT to FB

Do you guys find it difficult after switching to Facebook from MSFT? If yes, why ? Is the work more difficult or there is just more work to do?

Microsoft Lol5467 Feb 18, 2018

Are you moving to FB?

How is my offer relevant to the question? I asked how others feel !

Culture is quite different, I guess, seeing from colleagues coming from Microsoft. Facebook is a heavily IC driven company, at least in eng. If you're senior and are ok with that, then it's a great place to work. Not for everyone though.

Hopefully former msft ers will chime in here. One thing I’ve observed is that expectations are very different for senior eng between the two companies. At FB you are expected to drive large initiatives in a tech lead capacity: architecting, mentoring, leading, working on the hardest technical pieces; influence must be earned because we have no titles. From what I’ve heard at MSFT your role is more strategic in nature: give guidance across projects, sit in reviews, develop strategy; influence is conferred by title and role. I’ve seen people come from MSFT that try to just sit in team and project meetings trying to give advice full time and those people don’t last long.

Thanks for the nice explanation. You mentioned about senior eng - is a E4 a senior engineer?

Facebook E12 Feb 18, 2018

For the problems I mention I’m thinking E6+. For E4 it’s all about executing well on the work given to you and I have no idea how the two companies compare. For E5 there is an expectation at FB to take sort of a tech lead role and drive projects that will have team level impact - you will likely turn the team roadmap into a project plan for yourself and the more junior people.
