Do you guys think so? I still get contacted by students proactively applying without taking into account the implications of h1b and the visa mess. Anything else, please comment #engineering #software #swe Edit: MS is Masters, Bois and gals
OP, Are you talking about Masters? Looks like people are thinking you're talking about Microsoft.
Lol, they didn't read the option then😁
@Intuit are you planning for masters too?
Lol, that s what I was wondering ...
Those selecting still worth it, mind commenting as well pls?
Didn't comment because this doesn't apply to everyone, but if you are curious, 1. Didn't need to pay for masters, was given 3k a month salary/stipend and tuition was fully paid by scholarship. 2. Got to publish many papers at top conferences, almost a PhD at this point but done in a MS timeframe, so less time spent. These papers stick with you for life and are a great achievement to be proud of. Academia holds them in high regard, practicality of research also interests companies for certain positions. 3. If you've done research you know how to drive projects by yourself. Bias for action, ability to put your all into something and achieve results, ownership already comes hammered in from years of hard work as a researcher on graduation, preparing you to rise fast in career. 4. Other countries are options too, you bring your abilities, knowledge, and published credentials with you.
Did you MS? Which uni offered a full ride though? Mind DMing ? PhD is either ways fully funded
It's correlated with visa policies. Without the option to build a career here, MS is not that valuable. Not everyone has the kind of money to do it just for the experience. People who are academically inclined and capable will still come for PhD. Whether or not visa policies will be relaxed is hard to say. Fortunately, US has a fairly neutral judiciary, so it's easy to undo dumbassery most of the time. People are saying the new visa restrictions are from the POV of economy; I am hoping they are honest and we don't end up in a situation 2 years down the line when people are emboldened enough to outright say they don't want any foreigners in the country, economy or not.
Lol, dumbassery
You can recover the money and then some even on just the OPT period with FANG like salaries.
Worth it for the experience, and no one will fix anything for ya.
IMO it is still worth it given the three year OPT, but the new rules will drive away some companies from hiring international students even though they can work for three years uninterrupted
What is “MS is Masters Bois and gals”
Added a comma gre King!
Sorry for being from another solar system, I am not knowledgeable enough to know what is specialization called Bois and gals, what is this gre King. Never mind.
You think the value of an academic degree is measured primarily with immigration policy? Huh?
In the long run a degree will always stay with you. This post was on deciding if it's even worth it with investing over 50k usd if the main aim is to get a job after graduation. Yes, if you are doing it for pure learning then sure, many do it to access us job market
An MS from IISc (Indian institute of science) has more value than an MS from an average university in the US - if the goal is to work in India.
Why do you think Biden will fix it ? Did he fix it in past . MS is more attractive now with policies set to discourage IT sweat shops which means you have higher chance of securing a better permanent job .
But how many companies in the US sponsor H1B visa?
Most of master's students are Indians? Surprise?
Actually this data point is wrong . Based on last data I saw (need to check updated one). 130-150K Chinese Grad Students in a year and about 80-100K Indians . Although numbers move every year but difference has been steady
Losing shine? Since when did MS ever have shine to begin with: its absent in both FANG, and FAANG
So are some other companies too: despite having sub par talent, much less job security, non existent prestige and losing on pretty much every metric: just like Microsoft. I mean there's a reason its unequivocally categorized as one of the lowest tier of companies in tech, no matter how much its employees dislike that fact
Lol. MS means Masters of Science. 3 folks got fooled, 0 more to go.
