Quite a while ago in 2022, I applied for a CV SWE role at Magic Leap in Zurich. I wasn’t sure if this was the best idea as I read a lot about their history. But with ML2 and the new B2B strategy I felt comfortable enough. I cleared the initial screening with the recruiter and the technical round, so I was invited to the full virtual onsite: 5 technical and one behavioral, I would call it. The interviewers were quite friendly and supportive, while the questions themselves were a mixture of CV knowledge, system design, low level optimization (cache and stuff) and coding on Leetcode medium level. I solved all of them with optimal runtime except one (interview time was over). When all was over, the adventure began: I heard nothing from the recruiter any more. Also contacted the interviewers, but they pointed me to the recruiter. I think 6 weeks later I got an answer that he was on vacation. Wow. Next day I received a standard rejection mail. I asked for more detailed feedback, but nothing. Also the interviewers don’t react any more. OK ghosted. Maybe because of my one not so optimal solution. Why don’t they just write: interview 3 of 5 was bad? Something specific. After a while, I had the idea to check on LinkedIn Premium (trial month) some company details: Number of employees (at least those with a profile on LinkedIn) in July 2020 was pretty much the same as in July 2022: 1227 with slight fluctuations of around 10 people in between. So what do you think: Are they really hiring or is it a hoax? The roles I applied for were there already for around 90 days and are still active or refreshed on LinkedIn jobs. Summary: It was a good experience during the interviews, not so good outcome, shady feedback and lots of preparation time gone. #magicleap

Do people underestimate E6 role at meta?
I had an offer from them a couple of months ago. It was a solid offer. I eventually turned it down due to an ever better one, but if that better one wasn't in the picture, i would have absolutely loved to join Magic Leap. I gotta say though that their interview process is not standardized. From the stories my impression is that things vary significantly depending on which team, which HM, and which recruiter you are dealing with. Also, in the meantime recession sneaked up on to all of us, so maybe that didn't help your case either. Who knows. Look around, but i wouldn't give up on them forever :) you never know what the future brings.
Yes, I also like what they do. The ML1 was already pretty cool, but with the dimming in the ML2 they are bringing it quite close to VR. And VR on the other hand has passthrough, so AR and VR are growing together. For b2b AR, Apple and Magic Leap are at the front, IMHO. Let’s see, I will try interviewing with them later and move on in the meantime.
You're thinking too much about it. Magic leap is just yet another overpromised-and-underdelivered startup. Nothing really to see there. Move on.
