Hard reality with all what it going on in the tech industry! I wanted to get a new job at Faang in the US, build my network, secure my future but now it is hard to know what to do! I am almost 40 yo, with 100k cash and my house (300k), no wife or kid. Form my research I see that mid-level SWE are paid around 250k-300k with is a huge for me (80k£ in UK). Now, will all what is happening, I am thinking for the safest-best plan for me: - Starting a side business like YouTube (Around computer science - ML content or Finances as I am really passionate about both), the goal is to sell courses after getting subscribers and it will take time (2-4 years) in best case. But, I can do it while working 9-5 job - Building a startup, I am working on 1 project and it is really promising but startups have 99% of chance to fail and if it not they I have to dedicate 10 years or more before seeing any success (IPO or Exit) - Prepare for interviews but what is going on I am not motivated and don’t know if it the good option. And getting to the US is really hard! And honestly, I am tired to work for someone else! My goal is not to become a billionaire but 3-4m to retire early (in 10-15 years) and enjoy my life (travelling, spending time with family (maybe find a wife but no kids), work on any project I want as hobby … Given all this information, what would you do?

In a similar boat to you mate! Just know that with cost of living going up, saving will not be easy unless you get a 350+ salary, which is doable. I don't know how YouTube works but seemed more appealing to solve some problem for a niche instead and sell some software and then sell the company
Are you based in Europe or US?
US. You could also sacrifice lifestyle and live in a lower cost area and save more

80k is very low even for the UK, are you based in London? If you are someone who can keep putting a lot of effort without seeing immediate results then side business or YouTube may make sense and it's better to start these on the side without quitting your job. If you want to see immediate results then work on your interviewing skills, tech skills and get a better job. You can at least double your TC if you work on it.
I am in Bristol, I work for Airbus. Interviewing for me it doable, I can do it but I want to get a good job with a good salary which means Faang in the US but I am not sure if my age (40 yo) and getting a visa is doable
The cost of living in Bristol is similar to London with lower pay. Try to get into a pure software company and they will value you more and pay you higher also! Tons of jobs like this in London or remote if you don't want to leave Bristol. To go to the US, your best bet is to work for a US company in the UK and then apply for an intra company transfer for a role in the US and the company sponsors your H1B. Maybe you can even find roles in the US at Airbus.
