Manager asks me to check emails / respond to slack during my PTO
I am taking 3 weeks PTO and will be out of the county. Manager said I should try to check my emails and messages occasionally, not to “work”, but so that I don’t appear like I disappeared completely. Wtf does this even mean, why can’t I disappear completely during my PTO. Slightly annoyed.

If they will give you vacation hours back for doing that, then sure. Also, isn't this what out of office auto replies and slack status icons are for?
If you have a system that tracks PTO days, subtract the days you check in from the time off and make sure your manager sees it. If it's an hours based system, then at least half a day off because you need to "read emails and prepare responses."
An out of office message should address the managers concerns but if you do work, that time should be recorded as work hours and not PTO on your timesheet.

How strict is apple on enforcing time off? mark it as 2.5 weeks off and spend 1 hour each week checking in. 3 weeks is a long time. If you want to check out for 3 weeks that is your right but you might get less responsibility when you come back
Thanks for the reminder on why I should never work at Amazon. I've taken 3 weeks breaks everywhere I've been (Google, FB and Netflix) and have clearly taken for granted the supportive environments they have that allows me to fully disconnect during that time. Being afraid to lose responsibilities when taking time off sounds rough..
WTF? PTO is for you to take a break. You don't need to check it at all during the 3 weeks.
