Hi all, joined roughly around a year ago as a Senior SWE and this will be my first official perf review cycle (joined slightly after the last one, we only have 1 review cycle a year), during the mid year unofficial review I asked my manager how I was doing and he said he is very impressed and I can expect an EE as long as I maintain my performance and complete my projects well. Recently (around a week ago) we had another chat since the review cycle is coming up and I asked him how things are looking regarding my rating, and he said that I'm doing great but before he can give me an unofficial rating he will need to look at how other people in the team are doing etc. so he can figure out what the "bar" is before giving me my final evaluation (though in many perf info session meetings they said we wont compare people against each other for perf). He said I'm definitely above CME but he doesn't know if he can give me EE yet and will let me know. How do I tackle this weird situation? I was expecting an EE and now it feels like I might be getting blindsided and possibly getting a CME last minute, anything I can do now to ensure I get an EE? Or have I just got unlucky with my manager? Would love some thoughts / opinions, anything helps. This review is important cause not only my future promos depends on it but so does my equity refreshers and comp etc. Note: CME = Consistently Meets Expectations, EE = Exceeds Expectations TC: 430K
stack ranking 101. You can never assume your score before calibrations are over.
Don’t think your manager is being iffy, sounds like he’s being honest. EE is only given to a small group of people and your manager doesn’t solely decide - it’s decided during calibration with org leads/etc.
ah, TIL, so a committee approves EE? anywhere I can learn more about this process internally? there is barely any transparency
all internal source you will find will be corporate bs denying that stack ranking ever happen. Friends who are managers or high level IC sitting in calibrations will be your best source of infos. Blind can also help.
Yoe?
5 YOE
You joined as a senior at 2 yoe with an initial offer of 430k? Am i missing something? Never heard of instacart offering that much before
L5 or L6?
L5
Your cash base is 200k as an L5? I don’t have any advice but a similar situation happen with my perf reviews in the past. Manager telling me everything great throughout the cycle then the review comes out and the feedback is suddenly a surprise. It sucks.
Eh, is this a new manager? Which org?

hard for me to find a company that beats my TC, that 430K was before the last 39B round, TC is actually around 650K+ now
How much of that is paper money?
