I have manager who is very in secure , he takes all our work and go to leadership and shows he did it . He hide things and we are just a slides making guy for him . Promotion he always abuse and make you feel you don’t even should have current position . Very insecure and he just want to promote and show off himself . Yearly review gives 80/90% everyone of bonus amount and pay raise is 2% . Everyone left one by one but new peoples join and he starts his journey again. Now with sprint he is even more insecure and doesn’t let us email anyone hide things and just control everything very much micro manger . Wish never joined him . People complained HR but he got promotion instead of any action . Dont know what to do ? It’s impacting health
Be careful with him.. He's a pretty powerful manager if he's the one that decides that raise is only 2% company wide.. and what is the multiplayer for the bonus..
The short answer is: RUN! I have been in a similar situation, it will drain you and you will never feel like you have contributed enough. My advice is to do everything possible to move away from that toxic manager who would eventually stab you in the back. There is no way you would ever be in a worse position than the one you are in right now. You should be in a place where people value your strengths and you will receive the raise you deserve.
Looking inside the company but tmobile is very bad in internal transfers so much politics they won’t let you go easily . So now only way is to get outside but with pandemic things are sketchy hopefully soon . Thank you for response .
Start looking. You would be better off that toxic environment. What is your position?
Is there any advice y'all can share on identifying such managers before joining them ? What key questions can we ask (them and thier team) and what tell-tale signs should we look for ?
I would say a key would be to ask how the manager helped promote the career of the team members that reported to him and in what time frame. The managers in question don’t like promoting people that work under them and are rarely happy with the performance of their team. They usually would talk highly of the people that are above them. It is great that you are asking this question!
He is not insecure. He is Machiavellian. Learn to understand root cause before you jump on conclusion and take wrong actions.
This is so true , whenever talk about promotion he says it depends on business needs and gives round and round answers . He talk very nicely anyone above his rank and I can see his artificial plastic behavior , goes in every meeting and worse he dont have time I never have 1:1 in last 2 years other than I yearly review meeting 10 mins . Manager suppose to do every week or by weekly 1:1 . In short I was not able to guess in interview about his personality it’s 7 years found in earlier but due to some family commitment , sickness and death couldn’t move . I guess it’s time now.
best of luck on the move
Definitely leave. You will never be happy working for an insecure boss as they will never have your best interest.
He is not insecure. He is Machiavellian. Learn to understand root cause before you jump on conclusion and take wrong actions. I can see already that you’re not good at office politics hence frustration. Any manager who good at getting promoted and surviving is going to be like this. There is no escape to this. You just don’t want to be wrong on side. There are also benefits to having such manager. Your team members will have job in downturn and he will convince higher management to cut other teams.
