I got an offer in FAANG (20% more overall) My manager is leaving Google to a competitor (Facebook), I joined the team last year because of him. In the past 3 months a peer has been trying to get promoted to replace my manager (Same level as me) but not ready yet and people don't like him (Including me). My skip level just took over the team and not sure what structure he will arrange. (Team size: 15 engineers, 2 subteams and few ICs) Skip level --> Manager leaving -> Me YoE 15 TC: 380K SWE L5 - Bay Area Past performance: EE, SE What should I do? Update 1. My skip level doesn't want me to report directly to him Update 2. My perf rating most likely will be SE again this cycle. So L6 seems to be a 6 months away.
Unless you are HW you need to have left Google yesterday. That TC does not do your yoe justice.

Build trust with skip level and show leadership qualities that you are driving high impact work. If you are manage to gain his confidence he might promote you as well But chances are he might bring manager from another team to lead your team . So plan your move accordingly.

E5 can lead a team of 15 engineers?
Figured the two subteams are 6-7 each (including op themselves on one). So realistically op will manage 5 other engineers - very normal for L5.
I see! I had no idea that L5 can lead a team of 6-7. Go for it op, remember if you don’t ask you don’t get it.
Is google really considered a competitor? Is it because of advertising?
Google internal promo timelines are dead slow and you seem like you’ve given them more than they’ve given you at this point. Time to go!
How many other L6’s are there on the team?

Why doesn't OpenAI offshore and reduce expense by 80%
Does your skip like your peer? That's all that matters. In all due likelihood, they will just bring in another manager from elsewhere and not promote either of you.
+1 - rec's probably open already. Waiting for one of the 5 to get promoted to 6 could take a while. Most likely a new manager, so take your TC+20% offer and try newer pastures. You can always come back.
I thought its usually common practice to not put a peer as a manger unless you get everyone on the teams consent. Otherwise dynamics will be weird.
