My wife shared her Fmla start date as next Monday with her manager and he was pissed. You could tell he didn’t like being not in control and huffed and puffed inside. He mumbled pc words like family first etc - no solace, no compassion and then very sternly moved her Pip meeting from next Friday to this Friday. And then awkward silence, my wife said thanks again I just wanted to share this info, bye. And he snaps back mocking and with a contrived smile - bye bye bye bye and logged off zoom. I’ve told her to take sick leave next 2 days and just start Fmla From Monday. I also am Wondering if she should file a complaint with HR about this managers abhorrent lack of compassion and respect for individuals. Why stir a hornets nest at the beginning of a Fmla ? Any pros or cons for the long term ? Please advise . Thanks

Don't these managers get basic training on people management?
Getting trained and following it are two different things
Contact HR. You actually don't need to come off as you're brutally upset about this all. HR always wants to protect the company. So if your manager does this shit, set up a meeting with HR and say something like "I did a, b, c and my manager responded with d,e and f. All of these made me very uncomfortable and I didn't know how to react. I'm lost and confused, I didn't expect this from my leadership, and wasn't sure what to do about it, so I wanted to chat with you." At this point HR will need a very solid reason not to address it and let it go, risking their company's reputation goes bad if your wife decides to share the same thing publicly.
Long term, your wife should get a new manager or job. Might as well take the sick leave too. Complaining to HR right now won't help anything, but save the story for an exit interview.
LOL, what a horrible advice. Exit interview is pointless in every possible way. Never save anything for it.
Honestly you sound very annoying. This literally reads like a reddit post on antiwork
A true amazonian response.
Kmol i second your opinion
Yes, send an email documenting his response in as an objective way possible. From the limited info sounds like she was already on a pip.
That is correct. She is not yet on PIP. Manager just had one casual passing conversation with her a few weeks ago alluding to a performance discussion with HR present. We will avoid this meeting at all costs. He may try to send something over by email but Doesn’t this have to be done real time and not email?
Nothing about her poor performance is documented. She has received good annual review and bonus and also congratulatory one year anniversary email as recently as 2 months ago. The meeting with HR was set up my manager after a sudden 1x1 convo during which he mentioned her performance is not adequate blah blah subjective nonsense.
FMLA doesn't magically protect you from PIP. Manager informed his wife of the PIP meeting before she even made any decision to apply for FMLA, let alone inform the manager. Now all of them are playing the game of moving the date forward: manager is moving the HR PIP meeting date, he/wife are moving the FMLA date forward. Being "mean" is irrelevant. It doesn't sound like OP even has any evidence, beyond "he said, she said", of the belittleing. When you complain to HR, you have to have a reasonable outcome in mind; there's no "reasonable" outcome here (besides moving the HR meeting date forward). Besides, presenting any such evidence would require talking to HR, yet they're doing the hiding game of trying to avoid talking to HR at any cost.
Thanks . She is taking sick leave. What happens if manager decides to send whatever Pip via email - can he do that ??
