How would you compare a grade 10 manager vs. a grade 10 technical lead (PE)? Which is better and why? #Intel How technical are managers at Intel?
Have you worked in both companies or just your perception?
Salary-wise I'd say it's about the same. Most of the manager were engineers before they transitioned, so they often have excellent depth. For the ones I've worked with, they are able to understand and arbitrate known issues to proper lanes. WLB often will suffer as a manager though. Technical leads get much better visibility and better WLB. So there's that.
They are two different roles. Could you add details on what your area of expertise is and the BU? Coming in as a PE can be a lot harder in a more established BUs as the title is awarded after a committee review and there maybe sticklers in the org that can prevent that. The interview panel will be a lot more senior, 2 Sr. PEs and 2 Fellows required. They may offer a G10 IC instead - Same pay etc, but you will have to formally become a PE before you can move up to Senior PE. The technical ladder is more political and harder to move up. G10 Manager is a director, usually required to have n no of reports, has more people/project management responsibilities. You usually lose your tech edge down this path unless you make an effort to not let that happen. Itâs usually the faster path to VP. In my opinion, Fellows have less influence than VPs on project execution and long term strategies. DM for more.
The note above pay being same is wrong. PE pay is higher. It's possible to be first level manager as PE. You should ask for both. If you want to be a SLM then probably have to forego PE
A. It depends the job codes. For several, they are the sane. B. You can always be a technical ladder with reports even an SLM and higher. Doesnât mean that you will be effective at both.
A) True but exception. Majority cases not true. B) effectiveness is for the hiring team to judge. If someone asks my advice I'd tell them to ask for PE even for g10 manager role
Maybe itâs team dependent but the managers I know at Intel are all very technically sound.
They are a dying breed.
Are there three types of g10 employees: PE, Director and SLM? Or SLM = Director at g10? And since becoming a PE is much harder, Iâm guessing they are paid more than Directors? What about folks who become PE after like 20 years at Intel. Were they stuck at g9 all this time?
You can be a non PE IC, PE and Director/Manager at G10. G7 and above are terminal grades meaning you could stay there forever until you are moved up.
Makes sense now. So if you become g11 non SrPE IC, can you still become PE? Will you go down to g10 for that?
Are you currently ict5? If so wouldnât you be taking a hit TC-wise?
Some managers are technical aim are routers.
Very tough question to answer without knowing about team/ roles. It really depends on what career path YOU want to take in future. Both the roles have their own plus and minus. If I had a choice I would pick PE.
Why from Apple to intel ?
Why not?
Apple is superior in cutting edge, pay đ°, quality of work.
