This is not at PayPal, but a well established startup(series D ) The purpose of focus time is to not get distracted. But if I go on focus mode, not replying to slack is raised as an issue. I typically start doing actual coding after 3 pm everyday. Most meeting run till 11:30 pm or 1:30 pm with 1 hour break in between. Day is fragmented. Except code review I can’t do nothing productive in that 1 hour. What am I doing wrong? Or should I continue to be responsive till 5 pm and then do my actual work? That’s how I did for first two years till I got my i140.
When you are in the focus time, put a status on slack that you are in focus time and will respond after x pm Setting expectations that you are not going to respond right away and that you are busy with something else might ease it out
No one in the history of mankind has ever paid any attention to slack status messages.
Maybe not at your company, but slack statuses is big in our culture at mine.
Do you coworkers msg you with the following “Hi ….. “
Yes. “Hi…”Followed by actual question
No offense, but programming and Slack replies are not mutually exclusive. Sure, it is annoying to be interrupted, but it's pretty much par for the course.
No meeting time doesn't mean no slack time.
But getting pinged every 20-40 mins is almost like a meeting. And each chat goes for 5-10 mins
You should at least reply to some of them
How long does it take for you to reply to them? You don’t mention it in the OP
Replying within a day is acceptable
May be you should try manual labor job. Do your thing whole day. No interruptions. In other words grow the f up. That’s how corporate job works.
Can you code in morning before meetings?
No right or wrong here. Just have to set the proper expectations with your manager and team.
