Three years into my career, and I notice my manager easily puts in 60 hours, slacking and emailing me on weekends, etc. The next step in my career is senior, and I was told it's impossible to reach a rating of above average without putting in 50+ hours, and my growth to senior will be slowed as well. Can I truly not have above average impact while putting in normal working hours and move up quickly?
Depends how good you are TBH. The better you are the less hard you have to work to get ahead. Of course if you’re really good and work your ass off you will move up super fast, but you can still climb the ladder if you take it easy and are really good. If you’re not naturally skilled you’re definitely going to need to be putting in longer hours.
No irrespective of how good op is, if that manager has that mindset then Op will not get promoted no matter what. This is a perfect example of stunted growth mindset
Oop$y is correct. And what's worse, if we're talking about someone really talented, a manager like this will just expect more.
Sounds like your manager hates his wife, and she is fcking the next-door neighbour. No one should work that continuously! However, on occasions, it's required, BUT that's a choice and should be paid / hour! And I'm a manager.
Dude.. tech now is not Exxon mobil.. see what these kids are paid.. OP probably makes 2x of what you do.. and yes it’s a slog.. there is no free lunch…
That’s the real question though isn’t it? If I have to work 60 hours per weeks to make double the money I can make working 30 hours a week doing chill corporate gig - I’m not really getting paid more, just selling more of my time.
I’d look at it through efficiency/productivity lens, is the manager really efficient and productive for the full 60 hours or can it be done with less? You’d of course need to work hard to progress but I think it can be done with fewer hours.
While it depends on the job it’s rarely about the hours spent (anyone can procrastinate at work with zero productivity regardless of quantity) and more on the quality. If you have a unique skill set and are worth the company even 1 hour of your time putting out fires, stopping escalations in its tracks, fixing broken processes, know who and when to connect people to solve problems, etc then you could be saving the company millions in SLA, litigation, unhappy customers and so on. It’s hard to quantify those skills with just time worked.
Yeah this is incorrect… my manager worked at microsoft since the early 90s, had 10s millions in stock and is very successful as a VP. He says his biggest regret is not prioritizing life over work and says he and other leaders love to see people who bring worldly experiences to the workplace. You have one life and people realize when they squandered theirs.
Easy to say when you have 10s of millions and work is an option .. that’s not the advice I’d give someone new ..
you don't need so much money to enjoy life, you don't need to work so much, unless you are abnormally ambitious for superficial things
This is weird, till you are getting the job done , how does number of hours matter. Don't count manager's number of hours, most of their hours are spent in meetings and mails. These days I hardly see managers putting in 20% of their time to code/do engineering work . Hence their number of hours doesn't directly translate to your no of hours. CEO's VP's sometimes work over weekends. But in return they get the stage to present the products and same ratio of bonus and stocks 😂 Hence don't believe in that.. Having said that in all companies you will have few weeks a year where 70hours a week may also be required, but that's very few weeks maybe during release /golive/tapeout etc. But it's not the norm
Op, as long as you have this manager you will not get promoted no matter how many hours you put in. So don't waste time - either move out for better opportunities or live peacefully since it's not going to change for better or worse!

Put snooze 😴 on his communication & try to show this during screen sharing. That way this idiot would feel hurt b4 he fires you.
Can't believe this is in Intuit
It's tax season ba-beeee!!!
Coach Beard FTW!
You have a bad manager. Change teams or companies as soon as possible.
Says #readyforwork
Agreed with #readyforwork you have to have a work/life balance. Remember you can work 60-80 hours and when it's time to let you go they won't give you the same loyalty.
