Manager visibility @ AWS layoff

When L3-L5 ICs are impacted at G, their L6-L8 managers often had no say in that matter, sometimes no advance notifications either. Is it same at AWS? If you are a L6+ manager at AWS and your team was impacted, did you get to select the candidates? I don’t think any company is totally immune to layoffs but I find it very odd that people with very little to no knowledge in our day to day work are making such decisions at G and in fact some subject matter experts were impacted who were really the top performers.

I am an L6 people manager in my team. In my org at Amazon, my manager, L7, has always been transparent about ppl she had to pick during various cycles of layoff. I am yet to see a case in my org where the manager didn’t already know/ selected the people that were going to get impacted. How does google pick people without having any knowledge of their impact/day-to-day! That sounds crazy

If you don't have visibility past your skip, you are learning now why you should

When the layoffs hit my AWS team last year I found out who I was losing at 4pm. They were notified at 8am the next morning. L7 SDM The decision was made entirely at L8+ level

Was the selection fair and justified? If you were asked to make that selection - do you know if you would have selected the same people? Is it always based on past performance reviews?
