A lot of people want to quickly become managers so they can get rid of the slavery of programming which an average human isn't built for. Everyone likes to lead an easy life where they want to spend time with friends and family especially 35+ year olds because these people have kids so you can't write code when you have kids. Managers don't get ranked with a fixed Quota for firing so they have an easy life. Otoh the slaves aka Indian and Chinese programmers are tortured with PIPs and stack ranking with various kinds of leashes like h1b/GC queue etc. Managerial hiring is almost purely nepotistic because it's a white collar loot. Thoughts on this ?
ya it y i became manager
Hiring any SWE on your team?
have some headcount rn to pip in q4
This is true for bad managers. Good managers are incredibly driven and motivated and hardworking. But yes a LOT of people get into management to get away from programming and that fundamentally is the wrong motivation. Fwiw Manager myself. A pretty technical one at that. Rose up through the ranks. I am respected for my technical ability and leverage my past experience to spot oppurtunities and red flag. They way you have articulated the post though seems you have not been in Management at all. There are many nuances to management but your simplified view discounts so much more value a good manager can add.
If a manager is driven motivated and hard working then that's even worse. Because managers don't write any code or design systems. They would simply dump more work on their reports and drive them nuts. They would simply delegate more work to their reports and make them work harder. That's why startup founders are known to be hard task masters. They would use the stick as a means to fire people.
delegation baby
Sounds like you have never been a manager. And what’s up with the racist Indian , Chinese comment. Also they don’t have to come to the US.
Not easier than these frauds: r/EB1AFrauds (Reddit)
Used to be a manager, I don’t want to go back. I guess being a manager is easy when the ride is easy or when director doesn’t give a shit.
That is so true
Managers don’t just get to bark orders, they’re on the hook and responsible for owning the outcome of YOUR work and its impact to the business. Not only are they on the hook for a ton of difficult shit and keeping your pampered asses happy, but they get in trouble for your fuck ups as well. They’re PIP-ing you because you’re terrible, unfixable, more useless and more trouble than ChatGPT and they don’t want to be thrown under the bus with you when you fail to deliver. If enough of you collectively fuck up, guess which product is getting shut down and whose whole team is getting laid off? Think I’m wrong? Try being one. How’d I do? 😅
Yeah. Nothing wrong with that. Security Guards also don't do any work. They just guard the room or office and make sure no one is stealing. That's what a manager is then. He/She is like a cop whose job is to arrest and fire the low performers or slackers. Well the job of a cop isn't hard then ? And if these managers are at all required for business then why pay them more than the engineers. Let's just keep their pay to that of recruiters.
And the Indian and Chinese guys are more trouble than they’re worth especially if you let them talk to women in the work place and have to deal with all the HR fallout from that 🤷♂️ It’s apparently an entire continent of misogynists over there. Y’all think it’s easy managing you, but have you met you? 😅😅😅
True. I have seen managers contributing shit but no one can do anything cause they have the power of firing
Not gonna lie since taking on management I've had less peace of mind more work stress and more work writing emails and docs. It seems to me worse wlb and more stress
That stress is actually not hard. It's just that you are no longer in control of the outcome. Also as you get older you should not write code. You should let the younger kids do all the work while you chill with friends and family.
