Hello Folks at Marqeta. I recently appeared for a Backend Software Engineer position. According to the feedback I got from the interviewers during/just after the interview, I did pretty well. Today I got an email from the recruiter saying that they will not be moving ahead with my candidacy. I asked the recruiter for feedback because I was confident enough that I nailed all the rounds. The recruiter said they are not allowed to give feedback. This is a big disappointment for me. I looked up on Glassdoor to see other people’s experience regarding Marqeta and most of the people had similar things to say. Can anyone from Marqeta tell me what might have gone wrong ?
I take interviews for Marqeta once in a while. But as I am not from recruiting or hr I don’t know the exact policy about interview feedback. What I can tell you is that many companies Opted for not giving explicit interview feedbacks due to legal reasons. I myself interviewed in many other companies and some of those recruiters told me about those policy. Not sure if marqeta recruiting is following the same. I’m terms of feeling you nailed the interview - I think many candidates will be feeling the same. But there are behavioural flags that panelists collect that get discussed during debrief and based on that the panel/hiring manager often decides who is the right candidate they are excited about to work with. This is common to many other candidates and many other companies. If there is any marqeta recruiting team member who is reading this post, I am in favor of actually giving the feedback (not in detail due to legal reason) at the area where the candidate might have done better. It’s tricky, very tricky and a slippery slope - but many companies are doing it successfully- we can too.
Diverging a lil bit from the topic, but how are you liking it at Marqeta?
It’s good here. Has its own problems but overall lots of opportunities to make impact.
Marqeta is a small company, “culture fit” is important too. Sometimes interview performance is good but not great. It could be that someone got a bad vibe. It could be that someone was having a shitty day and didn’t ask enough “good” questions to get enough signal so they were “meh” and everyone else picked up on it. The same candidate could get dinged for “needing too much guidance” but another interviewer would say “how the candidate really partnered with me in solving the problem” for the exact same behavior I’ve seen all of these in MQ interview committees. Sometimes it’s just dumb luck, a flip of a coin. It sucks but there’s other companies out there.
You are right. I totally agree with you. The hiring manager was not in the mood to take an interview. It seemed like he was being forced to take an interview. That was the only round which I felt was off from the word go. He was literally drowsy.
That sucks. I’ve had or done hundreds of interviews, so much is just luck despite all the prep put into it
Hey OP, how was the difficulty level for coding interviews?
LC medium
Atleast they responded back they would not provide feedback. In my interview I had mentioned regardless of what the interview response be I am willing to re interview after cool off period 🤣🤣 because it feels like your company has good culture and my primary reason for interviewing is culture fit
I am disappointed if you are saying you didn't get a reply to your generous offer.
Yes, I had liked the interview process and was looking forward to response. Anyways ghosting on response is a very general HR bevavior.
How long did it take to get the results?
A week
I had pretty much similar experience at Marqeta. I doubt there is some internal reference that got preference..these shit happens..
Yes ! They said they have multiple positions for multiple levels. It’s pretty frustrating.
