Meta (E5) -> AWS (L6)?
Has anyone joined AWS from Meta? Could you share your experience? I received a L6 offer from AWS and considering joining but worrying about heavy oncall and WLB. I heard rumors about PIP but I've gone through several PSC games (last rating is GE) and I think I can deal with that unless PIP culture at AWS is really worse than PSC. I am okay with extra working hours as long as I am not dealing with shit shows. I can deal with reasonable oncall load. Will I be able to survive at AWS? TC: 385K 10 YOE
I worked at Amazon. Yeah, you will survive. I would recommend choosing a team with light on-call.
Why would anyone make a lateral move to Amazon?
Just don't join a team where it's hunger games, with backstabbing culture, you will need your team mates to ramp you for architecture, tools
All the head counts left are mostly hire to fire ones. But if you can prove yourself by working hard, you should be able to survive. Worse case just LC and gtfo. You already got into meta and now amazon, shouldn't be too difficult to get another offer.
I did a similar lateral move and I'm not entirely happy about it. Pip is not the only thing you have to worry about. Most orgs are extremely deadlines driven and top down unlike meta. Also the developer experience here is horrendous. It's at least 20 years behind the rest of industry. Also L6 is an extremely different role than L5 at meta. It's more of a sudo SDM.
+1 to dev experience being 20 years behind. Brazil tooling is infinitely worse than buck/blaze/bazel. Chime is worse than zoom or workplace messenger calls or whatever. The list goes on…
Didn’t do it. I spent 6+ years at AWS. That place stinks like donkey balls. Meta with all the current problems is still multiple times better than AWS.
You should be fine. Im ex meta, never worked at aws... But if you can get GE at E5, you should be good.
